The Nuance of Redemption · 4:43am May 24th, 2022
Redemption isn't really about forgiveness or punishment; it's just about trying to be a better person. The things you destroy remain destroyed, the people you hurt stay hurt, but the only thing that defines someone as irredeemable is unwillingness to change when the chance is offered. Believing that people who have done too much harm cannot be redeemed and have to be met with cruelty alone just trap them in "i have gone too far to turn back" and will bring far more harm than if they were offered a way out. Too many stories go with the extremes of having that character completely forgiven or having their redemption require their death and I think that lack of nuance can be a bit of a bad message.
I found this as a YouTube comment and I thought it was great, so I decided to see if anyone else agrees with it and why.
A shortened way to state it is redemption is a journey, not a single event, though a single event can trigger the start of the journey.
