Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

    Conflicted Crossroads

I have an interesting dilemma with an upcoming story, and thus I turn to the Fimfic public (or that portion of it that sees these blogs) for its wisdom.

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 6 · 12:56pm Jan 23rd, 2022

This week, we return to Trailblazer and company, and a day of seaside fun in the town of Amblerta before going a-questing to Yggdrasil.

Well, assuming your definition of “fun” includes freeing a siren who had been sealed under the town for centuries (don’t worry, she’s more grumpy than evil,) learning about an ancient artifact crafted by unicorns unwillling to relinquish the sun and moon to a pair of children, and dealing with a giant sea scorpion/laser turret that came out of nowhere.

Mind you, there’s also room for volleyball, shopping, and a massive beach party after convincing the siren, Furia Storm, to chase away the giant enemy crab. Plus helping Furia accept that a certain purple alicorn’s been creating a far more welcoming Equestria, and there isn’t a cadre of sorcerers just waiting to banish her to the Land of Thumbs and Smartphones.

In any case, let’s see what I can make of this adventucation:

Banishment Sorcerer 1WW
Creature — Unicorn Wizard
When Banishment Sorcerer enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent controls until you control no Wizards.
When Star Swirl vanished, his students maintained his great works.
2/1

Amblerta Coast Guard 2W
Creature — Pegasus Soldier
Flying
Amblerta Coast Guard has ward X, where X is the number of blue permanents you control. (Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player pays X.)
2/2

Artisan Couple 2W
Creature — Unicorn Artificer
Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)
As long as Artisan Couple is paired with another creature, Equipment you control have equip paired creature 0.
2/2

Paladin of Dawn 2WW
Creature — Pony Knight
First strike
Whenever Paladin of Dawn or another Knight enters the battlefield under your control, destroy up to one target artifact or enchantment you don’t control.
Few dark relics survived to modernity.
3/3

Chained Siren 1U
Creature — Siren
When Chained Siren enters the battlefield, each player mills two cards.
Delirium — Chained Siren can’t attack unless there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard.
“They’ll have to be crazy to let me go.”
3/3

Skittish Sea Dog 1U
Creature — Dog Merfolk Pirate
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you didn’t attack during your last turn, return Skittish Sea Dog to its owner’s hand.
Though amphibious, sea dogs are a rare sight on land. Few feel comfortable without salt in their gills.
2/3

Airship Navigator 2U
Creature — Harpy Pirate
Flying
Raid — When Airship Navigator enters the battlefield, if you attacked this turn, scry 2.
“Someone’s got to make sure this lot doesn’t get us lost between ports.”
2/1

Runaway Workbench 2U
Artifact Creature — Construct
Prowess (Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, this creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
U, Sacrifice Runaway Workbench: Counter target spell unless its controller pays X, where X is Runaway Workbench’s power.
Even accidents can be replicable.
2/2

Isleback Cancrix 5UU
Creature — Leviathan Crab
Flash
Whenever Isleback Cancrix enters the battlefield or attacks, up to one target creature gets -13/-0 until end of turn.
The only thing more shocking than an island standing up is it deciding it doesn’t like you.
6/7

Seaside Swindler 2B
Creature — Pony Pirate
Menace
When Seaside Swindler enters the battlefield, clash with an opponent. If you win, put a +1/+1 counter on Seaside Swindler. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of their library, then puts that card on the top or bottom. A player wins if their card had a higher mana value.)
3/1

Shadowed Nullhorns 3B
Creature — Unicorn Warlock
Whenever you lose life, create a Treasure token. This ability triggers only once each turn. (Damage causes loss of life. A Treasure token is a colorless artifact with “T, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color.”)
T, Sacrifice X artifacts: Each opponent loses X life and you gain X life.
2/4

Exclusion Principle 3BB
Sorcery
Destroy any number of target creatures that share no creature types.
With threats pressing in from all sides, early Equestria was quick to condemn anything unfamiliar as monstrous.

Uncertain Showdown 1R
Instant
Choose target creature you control and target creature you don’t control, then roll a d20.
1-9 | They fight each other.
10-20 | The creature you control deals damage equal to its power to the other creature.

Eccentric Chemist 2R
Creature — Pony Wizard
T, Discard a card: Draw a card.
3B: Return to your hand all cards in your graveyard you discarded this turn.
“Every reaction can be reversed if you’re determined enough.”
1/1

Curse of Limited Storage 4R
Enchantment — Aura Curse
Enchant player
Whenever enchanted player casts an artifact spell, that player sacrifices all artifacts they control.
“Of course I scrapped the gearhulk! There was no room for my new ashtray.”

Septentria Giant 4RR
Snow Creature — Giant
When Septentria Giant enters the battlefield, it deals damage equal to the amount of S spent to cast it to each nonsnow creature. (S is mana from a snow source.)
Don’t expect a warm welcome in the Frozen North.
6/5

Prowling Spider GG
Creature — Spider
Reach
Whenever a creature with flying enters the battlefield under an opponent’s control, put a +1/+1 counter on Prowling Spider.
Some towns have bears. Amblerta has spiders.
2/2

Wide-Eyed Farmcolt 1G
Creature — Pony Citizen
T: Untap target land.
“It’s a big world out there! Who wouldn’t want to see it?”
1/2
Go Wandering 1G
Sorcery — Adventure
You may play an additional land this turn. (Then exile this card. You may cast the creature later from exile.)

Open Community 2G
Enchantment
Whenever you cast a creature spell that doesn’t share a creature type with a creature you control or a creature card in your graveyard, draw a card.
Twilight Sparkle’s diplomatic renaissance has opened Equestria’s doors to any who come with friendly intentions.

Clone Ring 3
Artifact — Equipment
Whenever Clone Ring becomes attached to a creature for the first time each turn, create a token that’s a copy of that creature, except it has “When Clone Ring leaves the battlefield, exile this creature.” Then exile all other tokens created with Clone Ring.
Equip 4

Cursed Fragment 3
Artifact
T: Add CC. You lose 2 life.
Anti-diarchist unicorns created the Philosopher’s Stone to match the alicorns’ power. Though shattered, the Stone’s pieces still bear terrible might.

Plushcrafter BGU
Creature — Pony Artificer
When Plushcrafter enters the battlefield or at the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a creature card from your hand or graveyard onto the battlefield with a plush counter on it. That creature is a 1/1 Construct artifact in addition to its other types and has “If this creature would die, exile it instead.”
2/2

Siren Umbra 1GU
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant creature
Whenever enchanted creature attacks, choose one —
• All creatures able to block enchanted creature this combat do so.
• Enchanted creature can’t be blocked this combat.
Totem armor (If enchanted creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Aura.)

Siren’s Roar 2(wu)(wu)
Instant
Put all attacking creatures target player controls on the bottom of their owners’ libraries. That player draws up to that many cards.
Sirens have exactly as many admirers as they want.

Experimental Trial 3UR
Sorcery
Cascade (When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom of your library in a random order.)
Copy the last spell you cast this turn not named Experimental Trial. You may choose new targets for the copy. (A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.)

Stupid Complicated Game Alert: I'm having trouble figuring out how to contrive a situation in which Experimental Trial copies anything other than the spell you cascaded off of it. Maybe if you somehow have nothing left in your library that costs 4 or less, but good luck with that. :derpytongue2:

These blogs introduced me to the comic and Trailblazer and Moonflower are great characters. So thanks for that. Although I’ve noticed that you’ve never put a command/comment. Are you going to start interacting too when you’re all caught up to current?

Isleback Cancrix 5UU
Creature — Leviathan Crab
Flash
Whenever Isleback Cancrix enters the battlefield or attacks, up to one target creature gets -13/-0 until end of turn.
The only thing more shocking than an island standing up is it deciding it doesn’t like you.
6/7

And just when I thought that Hullbreaker Horror from Crimson Vow was terrifying enough

Cascade is a "may", so you can simply choose not to cast the found card.

Also, (IIRC) since Cascade triggers on cast, but the card's effect is determined on resolution, you can cast an Instant (or card with Flash) after casting the Cascaded card.
