    I Am Back

Hey everyone. I'm sorry for being so quiet these past few days, but Internet connections were pretty crappy at both the hotel and at the convention, so I figured I'd just save the big response for when I finally got home and unpacked.

    My First Convention

I'd been meaning to put this up earlier, but well, better late than never.

Tomorrow and through Sunday, I'll be out of town - my dad and I are going to a convention over in Beckley. Dad's going to be vending a table there to try and sell some books.

    Thoughts on Harakiri (1962)

Wow. This was a masterclass in buildup and tension. I knew about Masaki Kobayashi's movie before - a scathing indictment of the samurai and the honor code that they profess to live by - but all the same, watching the movie had me hooked from start to finish. :scootangel:

    Thoughts on Galaxy Quest

Finally getting around to writing up my thoughts on this one. I had heard plenty of good things about it from my parents, though I had yet to see it. Finally, we rung in the new year by watching "Galaxy Quest" with dinner.

Saw the new Spider-Man today · 4:12am Jan 12th, 2022

It was good.

Really good. :pinkiehappy:

I had a lot of fun with it, and after the more disappointing Marvel movies of 2021 (mainly Black Widow and Eternals) I was very pleasantly surprised by just how strong a film No Way Home was. It was ambitious, but it didn't come off as bloated; it was fun, without sacrificing more emotional or heartfelt moments; and its ending really took me by surprise - but in a good way.

Very happy to have finally seen it, and I'm hopeful that this streak will carry forward into the rest of 2022.

Eeeee. Glad you had fun.

I still need to see it.

Easily one of the best theater experiences I’ve ever had. 10/10, and I rarely give those out to any movie, even ones I like the most.

It was a very fun movie, and I'm quite grateful for having had the opportunity to finally see it.

I hope that you enjoy it too, whenever the time comes that you're able to watch.

Not sure where I'd put this on my own theater experiences list, but I will definitely say that the moviegoing season for me this year has gotten off to a very, very good start. :pinkiehappy:

I liked it myself, though I do think it's probably the most bittersweet Spider-Man movie to date.

Yes, Spidey saved the day, but Aunt May is dead, he's lost his friends, not even the Avengers remember who he is, and he's got JJJ hounding his poor butt. Mysterio got the last laugh in the worst way possible.

Speaking of, this is easily the most dickish that JJJ has ever been. Is it wrong for me to wish that, at some point in the film, some random person had accosted him and told him something like "By the way, Hitler wants his mustache back"?

That aside, it was a fun movie, and I think it was good that they acknowledged the two previous film series. Nice way of saying that those films mattered.

I'm glad that I am not alone in noting how bittersweet this movie's end was. It really took me by surprise how much it went there, but on the other hand, I'm also impressed by the movie's boldness in doing so as well. I mean, yeah, on the one hand, he's had his whole life cut down to the ground, but on the other hand, there's really nowhere for him to go but up.

Though I do agree, it would have been fun to see someone call Jonah out on his antics. I thought for sure he was going to get it good when he was heading to the apartment complex where the Lizard was holed up in that FEAST van.

It really impressed me how well they tied these movies together. The Raimi movies, the Webb films, and also these newest ones. It made me very happy to see all three big-screen Spider-Men together, and basically as a team of brothers.

Can't say I'm entirely fond of how the status quo was changed for Spidey, I thought the way it was before, in regards to Iron Man, was interesting, but I have faith in the writers.

Interesting that you say that. I was "okay" with it myself, but I have heard complaints from a fair few people about appending Spider-Man to Iron Man in regard to the MCU films. (My sister in particular, jeez, but since she's never liked Iron Man to begin with, perhaps to be expected.) Maybe it could be said that this movie over-corrected in regard to putting Spidey on more of his 'lone superhero' path, but I still have faith that they can make this interesting.

We'll see how things play out.

Bro we about to square up calling Eternals disappointing.

5626676
I'm sorry you feel that way, but I was not at all impressed with that movie. It just did not engage me at all. That's all there is to it.

5626679

You about to engage these hands. Thought I could trust you man. This movie was perfect.

5626680
Okay... seriously, I hope that you're not actually this mad about me not liking this one particular movie. Because really, if you are, and me calling Eternals "disappointing" is something that you consider fighting words... you may just want to take a step back here, and ask if this one Marvel film is *really* something you absolutely, positively, HAVE to get into a fight about. Because if you do, well, I'm not interested in going along with this.

Can we PLEASE agree to just disagree, in a civil and respectful manner, about this? If you loved the movie, more power to you. It was just something that did not work for me. I really do not see it as something worth getting this upset over. :applejackunsure:

5626684
Dude I'm absolutely just joking with you dude. If I was genuinely mad I'd be more critical but fair. I'm not about to ruin a friendship over a movie.

5626685
If it was a joke, I was not finding it funny. I have had people, on this site or others, go completely ballistic at me in the past over something as stupid as a damn movie. And while I myself am by no means perfect about keeping my own temper in regard to some opinions on certain works of fiction, I've also *really* grown tired of angry responses to different opinions on nerd culture - whether said anger is in or jest, or completely serious.

I'm glad that you aren't *really* angry with me, but I can tell you, 100% seriously, that I was not at all sure if you were actually joking with me or not. In the future, some kind of tipoff (even if it's something as obvious as an "r/sarcasm") would be much appreciated. Because, sadly, it's been my experience all too often that tone is very hard to gauge on the Internet (especially when communicating solely through text and not voice), and even if an angry persona is meant to be taken lightly, there are still some people out there who will take it at face value.

5626687
I legit considered it but I thought you knew man. Oops.

Edit: For real man I thought you knew I was just joking. I didn't mean to insult you or anything.
