The torture by itself would have just made him even more vindictive and cruel towards ponies.

Discord offers Pinkie to be his bride and she says that she couldn't turn him good in a zillion years, cut to a zillion and one years later in another universe and Discord is reformed. That's when it happens. In the one universe Pinkie accepts being the bride and Discord changes and then Nightmare Eclipse still kills him, and ever after that Discord is a good person but forced to do evil. Pinkie Pie reformed Discord all along.
