I used to tell others coming into the gym to look around and find the biggest, leanest guys they could. Once they did, I told them to think about what would happen if someone tried to jump those guys, attack their family, or what they could do if they had to help carry one of their loved ones.

Before they could answer, I asked them how any of that would affect them if it was actually them put in that situation.

Usually, buy that point, they were confused, so I would tell them the truth. That what someone else could do doesn't matter, because when it came down to them having to take care of themselves, or heaven forbid, help someone they care about that it would only matter what they could do themselves.

The condition of someone else doesn't matter, only what they were capable of. There's no point in comparing yourself to others other than maybe a goal of where they may want to be. The same applies in practically all aspects of life. You can't control others or allow yourself to be negatively impacted on what others can do or the success they have. You control your output and results.

Don't let others define your worth or become the base from where you find your value. it never helps you, and most people never really fully appreciate that.

It is okay! I love being a useless sack every now and then. It gets me to pay attention to what other people are doing, and it gives me more to appreciate about what they have going for them. There's a lot going on in the world, and a lot of the interesting things are driven by other people's sense of wonder. It's a nice thing to observe every now and then, even when I'm not participating.

I'm useless and worthless

I think usually the desire to be useful comes from a pressure to be more proud. Usefulness is relative. Worth is relative. The vast majority of people will be useless and worthless to the vast majority of other people. I often find it more helpful (and less miserable) to ask whether I'm proud of myself and the things I do.

You're a pretty cool guy. You should be proud of that.
You inspire people to do new things. You should be proud of that.
You care a lot about your friends. You should be proud of that.
You see depth and significance in other people's stories, and you try to channel it ways that are more accessible. You should be very proud of that.
