Story Notes: Put A Pegasus In Your Tank · 4:41pm Dec 14th, 2021

My birthday present to the site. That's right, it's my birthday and I'm giving everyone else a present.

Admiral Biscuit took the above sequence of photos of my car pulling into the Mobil station in question. I had intended on using one of these as the cover art, but it was too late by the time we got to there and these photos are too different from the vector of Lolligiggle from a lighting perspective to convincingly work. So instead, have an animated GIF of me pulling into a gas station. :raritywink:

Speaking of Lolligiggle, she's a G3 earth pony. Yes, I know what I just said. The vector is of a pegasus, and I needed a pegasus for the story. She wouldn't be the first G3 earth pony to gain wings in G4 (Skywishes made the leap to pegasus in the official toyline).

As you can see from the above, I had to modify the vector a bit for my purposes. She's even more adorable with the bunny ears and tail, but they weren't present in the story and hence they had to go.

Mobil's logo is a red pegasus. Exxon's old slogan was 'Put a tiger in your tank.' ExxonMobil is one company these days, having merged in 1999. Ironically, these two companies had both been part of the larger Standard Oil, which was broken up as a monopoly in 1911. Mobil became Standard Oil of New York while Exxon became Standard Oil of New Jersey.

While Standard Oil may not have much name brand recognition these days, it's likely you've heard of the company's founder, John D. Rockefeller. He retired in 1897, but remained the majority shareholder. After Standard Oil was broken up into smaller pieces in 1911, Rockefeller became the richest man in the world, as the initial income from those thirty-four smaller companies was substantially more than one larger company.

Mobil used to be common in this area, except that a lot of their stations in the Northeast had to be sold off as a condition of the merger with Exxon (these stations rebranded as Lukoil, which eventually also acquired Getty Oil as well). That meant finding one around here was difficult, but as noted in the story, there are three in a cluster in one of the towns in my area, all owned by the same company that switched back to Mobil as soon as they were legally able to do so.

Mobil was also common in New Jersey at one point, but since Exxon was 'Standard Oil of New Jersey' it seems Mobil has been mostly phased out there (as here) in favor of the Exxon brand.

Happy birthday

Dan

I trust in this continuity ponies are assisting in developing water-hydrogen separation or fusion electricity generation, and cars are undergoing conversion en mass, and the oil and gas companies are going down.

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday.

We can hope! Though I'd also hope that petrol will remain available for vintage cars after hydrogen takes over... or that I can convert my cars to hydrogen for a reasonable price.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :pinkiehappy:

Thank you! Yes it is - the 4.6 liter V8. Gas stations are pretty much its native environment. :raritywink:

Thank you and you're welcome! :pinkiehappy:

Weirdly, there's actually a 'Standard' Gas station near where I used to live. It's basically a Chevron with a different name, but there are a few of them out there in the wild. Apparently it has something to do with trademarks or something.

I've heard of them, but never stumbled across one. Looks like the breakdown as to who owns the right to 'Standard' in each state is below:

I also vaguely remember seeing some Amoco stations with mixed signage, and a sign that said "STANDARD" in the middle of the logo where it usually says "AMOCO". Been... years now since I last saw an Amoco station though, now that I think about it.

Amoco was Standard Oil of Indiana and had the rights to the Standard name in some areas. BP gobbled Amoco up in 1998, and phased the Amoco brand out over the next decade, only to bring it back in 2017.

Ah, happy belated birthday!
(Sorry, bit behind in getting to stories.)

I saw several this weekend (at least three) in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia along Interstate 70 and Interstate 79.

Apparently when I was very small, I liked to watch Tony the Tiger in gas station commercials on TV, so my first word was "Esso!"
