Correcting the Critics #2: "Save MLP"

It's been a while since I did my last part in the series. But recently, I saw something that encouraged this installment. A tweet pointing out what someone said 10 months prior. On November 25th 2022, Fluttercheer made a blog post on this site about Save MLP and sent a message about how supporters of that

ChatGPT came up with AU fanfic ideas

I'd say that the title of this blog post says it all, but I'd be lying. I'm not the type who would rely on ChatGPT. But I would certainly consider it once in a while and would most definitely recommend it, especially if you have writer's block.

Some of these ideas I may use sometime. Or anyone reading this blog can use them for their own inspiration.

Correcting the Critics #1: "Why Couldn't MLP been more epic?"

I've chosen to begin a new blog series where I look at the claims of trolls, haters, and ignorant people and pick apart their claims. I can't promise how regular or frequent this series will be. But I wanted to make a proper series with a straight-to-the-point name. In this series, I will also avoid actually posting any links or saying names. I don't want to give the people or groups any

De-Bunking Defect Compiler (Yugioh E-Quest Rules) [Confirmed] · 10:14pm Oct 7th, 2021

I hate Mykan. I think that's clear by now. But the thing is that I don't think he's 100% wrong 100% of the time (that's Mykan's mindset, not mine). So the fact that I'm blocked from commenting on one of his blog posts to agree with him on some details is kind of ironic.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying I agree with Mykan per se. I suppose this is playing the devil's advocate. But I'm going to agree with Mykan unironically. So this is De-Bunking Defect Compiler (Yugioh E-Quest Rules) [Confirmed].

Also if your fic uses the anime rules, why does everyone start with 8000 Life Points?

If you're going to make Duel Monsters more like the TCG than the anime by starting everyone with 8000 LP, you are in no position to complain when people say you need to follow the TCG's rules!

No, no, no... I don't STRICTLY use the Anime rules, I COMBINE the Anime Rules with real life rules. More on that later...

Fun Fact: In the movie 'Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions', they actually do start with 8000 LP. Granted, I doubt that Mykan even knows this fact, so I don't think it's defending Mykan per se. It's just pointing out that the critic isn't entirely right.

The use of Forbidden cards is only considered a defect in officially-sanctioned tournament Duels. Anime cards use the Forbidden / Limited list values of their TCG equivalents, if any.

Uh-uh-uhn... I said I'm combining the REAL and ANIME rules, and in the Anime...

There is no Forbidden list in the Anime, nor any ADVANCED FORMAT. In the anime, even in tournaments, they use TRADITIONAL FORMAT

Technically, the anime does have a Forbidden list. Or at least it has a card that's forbidden. The Golden Castle of Stromberg is a forbidden card in the anime. However, it's not forbidden in the TCG.

I know I'm pointing out what I'm agreeing with in this post. But I'd be defying my conscience if I don't point out the flaws in Mykan's reasoning. And by that, I mean the flaws that are just too wrong to let go.

Why even Zen Truesdale's Cyber Dragon deck, in those days... duelists were only allowed ONE, count 'em, ONE Cyber Dragon in their deck. Yet in the anime Zane kept using three. Riddle me that.

This is actually not true. Cyber Dragon wasn't limited until a couple years after its release.

CARD OF SAFE RETURN is banned in the Advanced format for Tournament Play

Newsflash: Even if the Forbidden list and Advance Formats were used, which they are not, That was an ordinary street duel, not a tournament duel.

I don't know what duel you're referring to. But this is true. The Advanced Format is for Tournament Play. Not casual duels.

But then again, the ADVANCED FORMAT in real life isn't just restricted to tournament play, even FRIENDLY DUELS are required to follow it. See you deal with that.

That is not true. Although it is optional, casual duels are not required to follow the Advanced Format. There are actually two different lists. One is for Tournament Play, and one is for Casual Play. The Advanced Format is for Tournament Play and is more strict than the Casual Format. If the Advanced Format applied all the time, it wouldn't be called Advanced Format, it would just be called the rules.

Masquerade is so mean to people, Good luck finding anyone who will play with you.

Someone skipped class that day...

Masquerade hardly challenges ANYONE to games/duels. The only time he actually DID challenge anyone was his first time meeting Rainbow Dash at the arcade, and Rainbow's ego led her to ACCEPT (Not knowing whom he was at the time)

After that... Masquerade was either challenged by other duelists, or because this is a TOURNAMENT... if you're assigned to him, you get no say and neither does he.

I don't know why it never occurred to me that this was an MLP crossover. Is it the Pony World or EQG?

But I digress. I'm pretty sure they weren't referring to tournament rules that require you to be matched up with someone without your say.

The Four-Way Battle-Royal duel for the semi-finals-- to determine who faces whom-- That can barely be considered a direct challenge either. He WANTED to duel Karle (Sci-Twi) so he manipulated the duel to arrange it.

EQG, got it. Although I have to point out that her name isn't Karle.

So don't go about QUESTIONING how he finds opponents to play against, especially he doesn't play for sheer fun and joy, but for power and greatness.

His reasoning for dueling has nothing to do with the topic.

First of all, what you have to understand is making Yu-Gi-Oh duels in fics can be hard work... you have to...

-Plan out ahead a little
-Make the duel last a certain length.
-Keep track of what cards are played, in play, and in hand
-Are the moves you want to make even feasibly possible, and how will they affect the rest of the duel

...And you have to watch out for your OWN RULES as well (Algorithm you set.)

I think you're using the word "algorithm" wrong. But other than that nitpick, I agree. I also agree that making Yu-Gi-Oh duels in fics can be hard. That's why I respect the writers of the show. Granted, they are able to make cards that fit the narrative and push to the victory. But even then, it's impressive.

-I don't see why you need to plan ahead "a little". I'd argue that you should plan out the entire duel from beginning to end before you actually write it. Plan out who will win, how they win, and the progression to that point. But other than my caveat, I agree.
-Making the duel last a certain length makes sense. But it has to fit the situation. And you can't make then too long either, or else you could lose the interest of the audience. You can extend the length by doing scene cuts to other events, but making a duel last too long is a bad idea. You could make a character win a duel quickly to show just how dominant they are too. So the duel length has to be fitting for the situation.
-Keeping track of the cards seems like an obvious thing to take into consideration. But no argument here.
-I feel like the fourth note is just adding extra nuance to the first note. But again, no argument here.

And of course, it makes sense to keep track of your own rules, including any modifications to the rules you may make for the sake of the story.

One of my rules is... "Only using cards that existed up to and including the Arc-V era"

What that means is... there's a BOUNDARY LINE of what cards can actually be used.

That's a fair rule to use. Although it does restrict you from being creative and creating custom cards for the sake of the fic. But you do you.

Also, you have to keep in mind that the CARD LISTS are always changing every few months or so. Some cards get banned, Some get unbanned.

This one of Principal Celestia's cards. It may be FORBIDDEN now, but it wasn't during the time I was writing the story.

What? am I supposed to go back and REWRITE the entire duels because that card doesn't work anymore? Forget it!

That's why, FORBIDDEN LIST is out...!

That makes sense for the most part. Though I would probably consider using the Forbidden List but ignore when it's updated so that I don't have to keep up to date. Or I could just make my own custom Forbidden List.

Sometimes, I have to use cards but allying their ANIME EFFECTS, or use cards that are FROM the anime, and don't exist in reality.

I'm pretty sure you'd be very hard-pressed to find cards that are in the anime but not in real life. But if you mean is that they don't exist yet, then I get it.

It may well be the only way to get the duel to work and proceed the way it needs to without violating the boundary line rules. Even the amines wouldn't be able to make all their duels work the way they did if they used OUR REAL RULES.

You can read what the card says; what it does in our world...

In the Anime, this card makes both players draw until they each are holding six cards.

Now that's a great way to refresh the players' hands (When needed) which can open up more options.

I'd probably modify it so that the number of cards you draw would be equal to the number of cards you banished from your hand.

(There are some other details I chose to leave out for not having anything to comment on. For context, just read Mykan's post.)

THIS... is my Yugioh algorithm for Yugioh E-Quest

Besides... doing this makes writing the duels more challenging to write (I have to look up more, and more cards, and I may discover cards I've never seen before.)

Those are guidelines, not an algorithm. But that's just nitpicking. Personally, I don't know why you'd want to make writing duels more challenging. I like the idea of using certain guidelines for custom duel rules. But I see no reason it has to apply to the entire fic. But I don't see anything wrong with it either.

And as a closure, don't mock me for giving people strategies used by the Anime characters.

I'd call you unoriginal. But I wouldn't fault you for it. I'd say that it's okay to be unoriginal in cases like this.

So what if Loki uses Declan's cards...

So what if Sunset and Pinkie use Yuya's cards...

So what if Sci-Twi uses Celina's cards...

Is it really a big deal?

Those are decks, not strategies. But my previous point still applies.

Wow, he used ORACLE KING D'ARC; a card that was never used in the Anime.

Ah-ahem!! Arc-V, episode 40 (it was used) and he claims he did more research than me.

Honestly, I'm pretty confident that there are no TCG cards that weren't used in the anime at least once. The anime is why the cards exist after all.

And then, he changes the mock to

"Wow, now he's using a female monster. How sexist."

*shakes head* just can't stand to be proven wrong... by ME eh?

If someone actually did make that comment, they are dumb as fuck! And I'm pretty sure that that's the first time in my 35 and a half years that I've ever used that phrase. Seriously, what about that is sexist? I have my opinions of Mykan. But I would never use an argument like that to make my point because it doesn't.

Honestly, I see no problem with combining TCG rules with Anime rules if it works. Or making new rules if it works. But the operative term is "if it works". I haven't read the story myself, so I can't say whether or not it works. And I do have my opinion of the quality of the story based on the author. But when it comes down to the facts and what is presented in Mykan's blog post, he does make some good points. Knowing him though, I wouldn't be surprised if none of those points weren't actually evident in his story though. But that's beside the point.

Now I'm actually kind of interested in the idea of making my own Yu-Gi-Oh!/MLP crossover fic. I wouldn't use EQG though, because I want to push my creativity. And with the technology in G5, I probably could make it work as a viable option.
