Nighttime in Numubya · 2:29am Sep 30th, 2021

The sex was dizzying. Springa tumbled through sheets of silk as soft as clouds, crying out in weightless ecstacy as she fell deeper and deeper into his embrace. He caught her. Every time. Whenever she teetered on the edge of empty space, he pulled her back. He was everywhere, insatiable, boyish in his insistence. She let him in. They tumbled together some more.

When it was finally done, Springa draped a thin cloak around herself and went to the window. Nighttime in Numubya was like a restless summer dream. The city splayed itself out for her like an awaiting lover, playing coy as he hid knives beneath the pillows. A summer breeze rolled through the room. In the books, they didn’t have glass windows, she thought. Oh well

The only thing out of place were the searchlights on the horizon. Half a dozen of them, concentrated around the port. They looked lonely, swaying like reeds, like her mane, like dancers. Criss-crossing from her perspective but never touching.

Her lover stood up from the bed and walked next to her. “The battle is tomorrow,” he said. He was a shorter pony, fur short, mane long. A powerful presence in a small package. Well--you know. Where it counted, everything was just right.

“They can’t schedule these things out,” Springa said. She surprised herself with how frightened she sounded. She’d fought in dozens of big battles. She’d been the captain of the royal guard before she began her new life in Numubya. She knew battle. Death.

This battle was unlike any she’d seen before. It chilled her to the bone.

“And yet,” her lover replied, “tomorrow there will be a battle all the same.”

“Will you go?” she asked. “To watch?”

“No. Will you?”

She chuckled. “I’m good.” She moved towards him. It felt like falling. Like always, he caught her, enveloped her. Coconut sugar and clove and just a hint of the dust that pervaded everything in Numubya. “I’d like to watch the lights, though.”

She felt him smile. “That, we can do.”

And after awhile, with the chill of night and sleep encroaching, Springa swore the spotlights turned to stars.

Dang, Bandy. You must have been in some sort of state.

That music.
This story.
They perfectly compliment each other.

This was good though. I want more, but at the same time this is too perfect to add on to.

5589606 Thank you for the kind words  I'm a huge fan of Brian Blade's music. He and his band have been the inspiration behind more than a few of my fics. If you dug that, consider checking out "Ark La Tex" or any other tune off that "Landmarks" album. Killer stuff.
