My thoughts on the Rainbow Factory fic · 9:46pm Sep 8th, 2021

I am talking about:
Rainbow Factory: a mystery unsolved

So I have just written my first fanfic and it felt amazing! It turned out so much better than I expected! All I was aiming for was writing something that wasn't just a reeking pile of words, something that would show Aurora how much I appreciate their work.

While writing I discovered that there is this special flow you get into while writing, its just so interesting. I was trying to keep the characters in character... yes. While also steering them into the actual plot points I planned.

My first idea for the contest was set in medieval Equestria, when the device was first implemented. I had difficulty wrapping my story around the documents Aurora Dawn had posted. The conflict would have been something invoving some kind of royal inspection, but the outcome was predetermined and it woudn't be so interesting to read. [There is a good fic that actuall does that] In the meantime a second idea was growing in my head, the one I wrote. I'm going to spoil anything about it, it's a mystery fic afterall.

The hardest part was to start, and even when I did, it all was just so tragic. I started off with zero experience in the writing field, the only saving grace were the fanfics I read. If not for their authors writing such good stories, I'd not be here right now. I'd probably still have no experience in writing and maybe even reading.

I have read so many horsewords, it became my main source of learning English. It's not my mother's tongue. Without those fics my knowledge of this language would have been so much poorer. I honestly can't thank those people enough.

While writing I gained so much experience with every new page I wrote, that all the text from the previous ones was becoming outdated, written by someone worse, even if I was him half an hour prior.

Before I even started, I had difficulty as to what kind of narration to use, and even after I did, I didn't know what to write there. Was this piece of information supposed to be written as a thought or not? That was a hard question I asked myself a lot. If I wrote this story with the experience from back then the entire fic would have been filled with ~50% of characters thinking.

Thanks to the autocorrect I didn't make so many mistakes, but it showed me how poorly I remembered how to write words. One thing it couldn't help me with was punctuation including "Dialogues", I hope I didn't make many mistakes in that department. I think I have it figured out now, but I'm not certain.

One more problem I faced was repeated words. The amount of times I checked with Ctrl+F the density of some words was astounding.

I'm worried I didn't nail Aurora's original characters. I definitely screwed something in the timeline, but I don't remember what it was.

The title and descrition are both very generic because I wanted to submit the story quickly before I went to bed. I still can't think of better ones as of a week later, I just don't want to spoil the story in any way.

I better wrap this up before I write a detailed description of the fic. Once again thank you for everyone who has ever written a fanfic, or any kind of art for that matter, and thank you Aurora Dawn for making me write this. It has been an experience I will never forget.
