Do I even need to explain why making a single city into a state is the WORST IDEA THE DEMOCRATS HAVE EVER COME UP WITH?
Why not make EVERY major city into a state, in that case! If a mere 700,000 people in a 66-square mile area is enough, then EVERY city of that size or larger should be a state! We'll have another 20 states all with Senators getting paid by taxes. Then they'll demand Congressional Reps too, and we'll end up with nearly 1,000 people in the House... and the corruption will be as horrendous as the Soviet Union's... it'll literally become Politburo in both size and ideology. Look up the 1936 Soviet Purge, the Maoist Purges, and so forth to see how that ALWAYS works out.
And then, add to this the fact that even more power is granted to the now-militarized seat of central government authority. Now where have I seen this before?
There is no way any nation survives this. And both China and Russia know it, which is why they're gearing up for invasions to expand their empires.

You do realize that people are more important to the establishment of a state than land is right? DC has more of an argument to statehood than Wyoming does.

This was one of the reason DEMOCRATS in the 90's pointed to when THEY REJECTED IT THEMSELVES. When it last came to a vote, 105 Democrats voted against it, for all the same reasons given now to reject it.

When a system is this obviously self-serving, its verdict can be ignored. It's all over but the shouting of "NANI?!" (see my previous comment). Stopping an individual bill is moot if madmen are still in charge, so either prepare for the coup or prepare for the collapse (and the former tends to lead into the latter!)

Rhode Island is only two times the size of DC (which isn't much mind you). And all of its population is basically sequestered in one contiguous urban expanse starting in providence.
Why don't you have an issue with it being a state?
Also, no. The people in Washington D.C. don't get representation in congress. They also pay more in taxes than any other location to the federal government. They should have their rightful representation.

Someone should counter with the idea for all the parts of DC that people live in, basically everything but Capitol hill, be annexed into Maryland. Then those people have representation and everyone should be happy. Of course, representation is not the real purpose of DC statehood...
I think we're at a the points were states in general need to be redrawn. Most of the borders barely make sense, if the districts can be redrawn why can't the state lines?
If DC does become a state that it effectively gives precedent for every major city in the US to become its own state. Not sure if such a system would be better or worse.

The vote in the Senate SHOULD be a non-starter. By Constitutional Law, state ratification REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 60 VOTES in the Senate, filibuster or no. That's in the very language of the document, in no uncertain terms.
But as we've already seen with the PA State Supreme Court completely usurping election law from the PA legislature in ABSOLUTE VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION, as we've seen with churches being forbidden to meet by executive fiat in various states IN TOTAL VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION (it is already long-established precedent that Constitutionally-guaranteed rights CANNOT be violated by individual states... otherwise the Deep Red States would be able to blanket-ban abortion whenever they wished, and Deep Blue States would just seize every gun they could find), no one seems to have the will to stand against leftist officials even for the most brazen power grabs.

Borders of Central American and African countries are often rather arbitrary too.
