Ok, I know I'm likely going to catch a lot of flack for this but there is one thing I don't do in my stories or in general, ship Spike. Here is why.
1. Well for starters, he is a dragon and there aren't that many dragons to ship him with. With Ember, come on she is the DRAGON LORD! She is in a position of power and I would think she would focus on her job, not loving a dragon way too young for her. When it comes to Smolder, I see her as more of that big sister that looks out for him. The episode where she shows her displeasure to her brother Garble over him picking on Spike. That episode proves the big sister/little brother dynamic they have. Despite being his younger sister, she seems to be able to influence Garble. That pretty much wipes out the available dragons to ship him with because I'm not going to go shipping Spike with a male. Even if I did, none of them would be shipping material at all.
2. He is A DRAGON. If there is one thing I'm not fond of, it is interspecies relationships. Now yeah, I'd ship a pony with a Kirin since they are pretty close in what they are. The same goes with sea ponies/hippogriffs, they are part pony. A dragon however, hell no. They aren't even remotely close biology wise other than being carbon based organisms and talking. I tend to look at it like a person engaging in bestiality, it is something that simply shouldn't happen. A minor joke about it is fine but an actual shipping, I don't care for it.
3. He is A CHILD. For the whole series, up until "The Last Problem" he is a child. Ok, I know some people will say, "but he got his wings, dragons age differently, etc." but to me, he is a child until that last episode. When the final episode arrives, reason # 2 still applies. Really, who the hell would find an adult having a romantic relationship with a child acceptable?
This is simply one of those things that I don't get, why do people like the idea of shipping a dragon with a pony, especially a juvenile dragon with an adult pony?

Good point, altho personally I don’t mind shipping him with Ember. As for those who ship him with Smoulder, she is definitely more a sister to him than anything else-on that I totally agree.
Well since you asked, the child thing is your opinion I think he’s not a child because age differently and the wings but I see why you’d think he’s a child as for the interspecies thing eh it’s a cartoon in real life I find inter-species relationships gross but in a cartoon I don’t really care.

Here is why I see him as a child. Outside of the wings, he really hasn't changed any in appearance. He still looks like a juvenile and because of that, I classify him as such. Yes I know this is a cartoon but still, the interspecies thing just doesn't seem right to me. I grew up in an area, very rural, where some people actually engaged in bestiality and it was one of those things that I found incredibly disgusting.

The Ember thing, she seems to be on a level that would cause her to not want any kind of relationship. She seems to be the kick ass dragon that would shun relationships, well at this point in time anyway.

How? Clear up until "The Last Problem" he is a juvenile, rather scrawny. Hell, "The Last Problem" could just be one big hypothetical prediction. I don't accept the episode as canon because it could just be a "what if" episode. Who is to say that things will actually turn out that way? For all we know, Twilight might be a horrible leader, Celestia and Luna have to take back the throne and Twilight doesn't grow up to be a Celestia re-color and Spike may not grow up to be the hideous abomination he allegedly becomes. Maybe he will grow up to look more like Garble.

I'm not a huge fan of Spike ships because I think it mostly looks weird and odd. It's hard to find another one that would be good to ship spike with for me. I just like Spike's grown up design in "The Last Problem."
I understand your reasoning. and I respect it. everypony has their own thing.
I personally hate some of the spike ships myself. how so many give him Harem's of pony girls and/or guy's.

I despise the harem thing, to me it is flat out disgusting. He is a dragon, not a pony and the ponies they put in his harems are even worse.

I think the Idea behind shipping a dragon with a pony, most notably a unicorn, comes down to the fantasy setting the world is in. yes they have very little in common biologically speaking. However, both dragons and unicorns are ancient and powerful as magic is their very life's blood. so while it would be extremely rare, it is within the realm of possibility. and he was being raised by ponies, so Spike has more in common with them then he does with actual dragons, plus Twilight was the one who hatched him using magic. so there's no real telling how that magic could have affected him biologically.
as for his age. no telling how dragons age in MLP. I like to see it they age no differently then ponies do. reaching maturity around the same time. But I still agree. shipping him with an older pony while he's still a juvenile is out of line. if people do ship him as a child. ship him with a pony his own age. like say Sweetie Belle for instance as she's closer to his own age and they would have much more in common.
He could also still be shipped with Rarity, but it would have to be written with spike as an Adult. yes the age gap would be a challenge but hey. there are a lot of 20 year old's out there looking for their own 'Mrs. Robinson'.
now I'm not writing this to change your mind. or to put down anything you wrote. if you think shipping Spike with a pony is wrong, hey that's fine by me. I respect it but I'm still going to ship Spike with a pony, but I stay away from the taboos of adult pony with juvenile because that does turn my stomach.

Hey, if you want to ship him with ponies, then that is your right. I'm not a fan of it, especially the whole harem thing. Things like that make Spike sound like a sexist pervert who only views mares as something to have sex with and collect as concubines. Even if it is adult Spike, the whole concubine thing is disgusting. Of course that is the "a dragon should never have sexual relations with a pony" part of me speaking.

Here is the thing with the Kirin, they are part pony which is why I would ship them with a pony. Thanks for respecting my views regarding Spike and not shipping him. Even if he were part pony, I still wouldn't ship him with an adult.
Spike is actually older than you think.
Especially with Twilight apparently is fine with leaving him alone in the castle or the treehouse or having him do hard-working chores or something. And the fact she made him stay behind to watch over the school and iirc Spike was doing some kind of duties up in Canterlot. Kids really don't get left alone in the house let alone watching over and maintaining said place(such as a library)
And iirc the writers confirmed he's called a baby dragon due to his size, not his actual age.

Honestly his design in The Last Problem is kind of fine to me.
Only main problem I have with it is the the chin there. It looks too much like that weird fantasy knight he imagined himself as in the Diamond Dog episode.

Most likely and I was trying to come up with something different over the other comment but then deleted it before I could come up with anything over Spike's age. Yes he may technically be of legal age in the series but still, he is portrayed as a child and that is why I deem him as such. Even with the age thing that he is older than he looks, it is still bestiality in my eyes.
I'd support shipping a pony with a Kirn or a hippogriff/seapony because they are part pony. Hell I'd even go for shipping a pony with a zebra but not something that isn't even remotely like them biologically other than them being sapient and being carbon based organisms. Well that and all the people who write Spike as "getting all the mares" really turned me against it to the point I despise it.
Yeah a joke regarding him and Rarity in a troll fic is one thing (I did that) but for it to legitimately happen in a story is something that I am not a fan of.

Hell, Twilight would be in serious trouble if it turns out he is actually a kid with her making him stay behind to maintain the library like that.
They usually hit or miss when making episodes focusing on him. Only hits I remember is Gauntlet Of Fire and Thorax's episode there.

Yeah most Spike episodes were sub-par. CMC episodes tended to be similar although I think they were better before they got their cutie marks. Those were full of silly antics that made the episodes more comical while after they got those marks, it seemed more like they were punching a time clock trying to aid someone in whatever problem they had. "Surf and/or Turf" was the only real memorable post mark episode for me and that was because of Scootaloo loving being a seapony and comparing swimming to flying.
As far as the episode where they got their marks, it is more overrated than "Slice of Life" and I think that is one of the most overrated episodes in the whole series.

The age thing yeah makes sense, the species thing? I mean i get where your coming from but those later seasons focus so heavily on the racism aspect and multiculturalism that having intersperses relationships be an allegory for interracial relationships is such a no brainer to the point where im shocked that wasn't an actual episode like even the whole yak x pony thing didn't really touch on that. I wouldn't really count it as bestiality unless If spike was more feral and less intelligent (lol) cause then id be 100% with you. Its like at that point where do we even draw the line right? If it walks on 4 legs like yaks, griffins, changelings, etc its fair game but if that got thumbs and scales its all of sudden the equivalent of an animal lol
