One Year Ago, I Was Nearly Stranded In London · 4:04pm Mar 13th, 2021

I was staying in a hotel at the time, enjoying a brief break from work before heading back home. If I'd stayed a few days longer, I'd have been stranded.

It's almost shocking to think how unsuspecting and ignorant I was of the global horror being unleashed, a mere twelve months ago. How things change in a heartbeat... :rainbowderp:

I feel you. Last January, the fam and I were out in Baltimore (a strange experience unto itself following BronyCon 19) for a big get-together. Little did we know the Rona was already in the States, but also (I believe) in Baltimore. Last February, I was out in Vegas for a big work get-together. I have pictures from it that boggle the mind today. And last March, our kids headed into Spring Break with a growing sense that something was amiss, which escalated rapidly.

I’m glad you didn’t get stuck. I’m glad things haven’t been worse than they were. There’s been some really rotten times, though. I hope we all collectively pull out of it soon.

It's like a world apart, isn't it?

The darker-in-hindsight thing was that I remember seeing notices about the coronavirus around London (on bus shelters and so on), but it seemed no more remarkable than any other distant health scare. My knowledge at the time amounted to: "If I wash my hands, I should be fine." A week later, I finally did some research on what the hell it was that was closing the country down, and it still took me another week to fully realize how bad this thing was and how much worse it could get.

Well, at least the vaccine programs seem to be making progress. I'm refraining from any hard predictions, but I do hope this particular pandemic draws to a close over the next few months. If nothing else, I'd like to go back to London again.

As Yogi Berra put it, though: "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future."

Wow, that must've been crazy! :pinkiegasp:

Hope you're staying safe out there, friend. 🤗

Oh dear, I hope you stay warm and safe

The tricky part would have been this: my hotel was well outside the city centre (I basically used it as base camp and went off visiting attractions during the day via the underground/subway system), so I didn't know the area all that well. I dare say I'd have adapted over the days and weeks, but with only my holiday things, it would have been a bit of a steep learning curve going in.

All things considered, I've been astonishingly lucky.

Well I'm glad to hear that. I'd probably get lost easy in alot of places, lol

Thanks, but no worries there: I got home fine and haven't had any major problems since. Even adapted well to lockdown conditions, all things considered.

This last year was a close shave, that's all. Still, it's kind of astonishing to look back and realize how differently things might have turned out.
