My Episode Review on Toy Story that Time Forgot · 5:42pm Jan 28th, 2021

Greetings, my friends.

This is your friendly film, TV show, and episode reporter here with another review.

Today, for my 55th episode analysis, I'm gonna give you guys my take of "Toy Story that Time Forgot".

Here's the rundown of it:

During a post-Christmas playdate between Bonnie and her friend Mason, Trixie, Rex, Woody, Buzz, an a Christmas ornament named Angel Kitty find themselves in the center of a new playset called the Battlesaurs, a society of anthropomorphic dinosaurs.

However, the Battlesaurs themselves have no idea that they're toys, and because of Mason not taking the time to play with them yet they're engaging in brutal combat with other toys.

After I did my analysis of "Toy Story of Terror", I knew that I wanted to review this special as soon as possible. I had originally intended on watching it via Disney+, but it wasn't available at the time for some reason. So, I watched it once via a free cartoon website, and two times in one day after getting a DVD copy of it. Also, I know that the Christmas season is over, but I figured that it'd be okay to make my review here and now since the special doesn't directly celebrate Christmas.

And let my just say, with complete honesty, that this special is absolutely amazing!

I mean, it did take time for me to really take things in, but everything about this Toy Story special was something that I found to be instantly pleasurable.

For instance, the voice acting, characters, and character development were TOTAL AWESOMENESS!!!

Among many things, I deeply enjoyed the special's focus on Trixie. It was amazing how the filmmakers were able to upgrade her from a side character to a protagonist that was surprisingly able to carry her own story, and she had all the right, emotion, and development to do so. Kristen Schaal gave a remarkable performance as the character, if I may add. Plus, despite not being the leads this time, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, and the characters of Woody and Buzz, managed to steal the show any chance they got.

The film's new characters and cast members were fun as well.

Kevin McKidd knocked the ball out of the park with his portrayal of Reptilius Maximus, and the character himself proved to be a wonderful new member of the Toy Story franchise. He had awesome development throughout the special too, and I can tell that McKidd and the filmmakers incorporated a lot of heart into the character.

When I later found out via a behind-the-scenes video that Schaal and McKidd recorded the dialogue shared between Trixie and Reptilius together, I was deeply astonished! The chemistry they created between their characters was awesome, and it sounded like the two of them were having a lot of fun interacting while playing their parts.

The story and direction by Steven Purcell were likewise terrific.

When it came to making the special a comedy, Purcell hardly messed around. Every gag and comedic moment throughout the special was executed flawlessly and had a great sense of innocence. The film wasn't without heart and emotion either, and the morals Purcell incorporated were nicely done too.

In addition to this, the animation was outstanding!

Similar to Angus MacClane's "Toy Story of Terror", I loved how Purcell and the animators were able to make the special visually-impressive with whatever small budget they likely had to work with, particularly to the point of where there was a sense of something incredibly cinematic. The character animation was my favorite of the animated elements, because it was both extremely lively and engaging to watch.

Finally, the music by Michael Giacchino was magnificent.

Just like his previous work in "Toy Story of Terror", I enjoyed how emotionally-invested his score was with the concept and characters; and despite the moment being rather short, the part where the Battlesaurs sing their own theme song was wonderfully well-played.

In conclusion, "Toy Story that Time Forgot" is another installment of the beloved Pixar franchise that's totally worth seeing. Everything about it is pure Toy Story all the way.

So, I rate "Toy Story that Time Forgot" five out of five stars.

I absolutely love this short!

I heard that the horn used in Planet of the Apes was used in this short.

Wait, was this the "just another dinosaur toy down the street, nothing more to see here" that Trixie was chatting with on the computer?

No, this special took place after “Toy Story 3”. If Reptilius was the pen pal Trixie had in the movie, he would’ve been open then and knew that he was a toy.
