On the Implications of Parallel Blockages · 5:06pm Oct 28th, 2020
As many of you probably noticed, On the Implications of Parallel Worlds missed a scheduled update yesterday. Sorry I forgot to make this blog post then instead of today- I got sidetracked. It happens infuriatingly often.
The problem, as always, is writer's block. Among other things; my writing has been much slower than usual lately, since I set aside a huge chunk of time to work on the house... and that work didn't happen, so I'm cancelling that today, going back to making money and being available to write stuff. Ahh, priorities.
But the writer's block is a very real problem. It's been on that for the last two weeks or so.
From the current point in the narrative, this is what happened in its precursor, The Gate:
- Conversations & discoveries between Ginny and Ariel, including her being invited to the Agency, all now superceded by a new structure between the two characters
- The Quidditch match Lyra played in, w/ Lockhart's mistaken bone repair
- The mass-meeting of Dumbledore, Fudge, Celestia, and SHIELD in the Hospital Wing
- Silversong gaining her female human form, now already happened
- Dueling Club
- Morning Sun appears and gets caught by Ginny, now long past
- The Diary is destroyed, and Basilisk defeated, during winter break
- Hermione got a call from her extradimensional self, and terminated the story.
Number one on that list happens to be exactly what On the Implications of Parallel Worlds needs next- character development for Ariel. Either that, or a sensical continuation of the Hospital Wing scene.
Unfortunately, there's no real way to do either one of those, that I've been able to find. Any ideas, to keep it from sitting on writer's block for another couple months or so?
I think I know of a way to give Ariel the spot light for a bit. Could it be possible for say Hermione or possibly Luna, Starlight, and Twilight to create an amulet to give a temporary ‘solid’ form to Ariel? I can see someone doing a backtrace of where dark Magic could radiate from if you think of it like radiation that Ginny was exposed to.
Personally, I think Ariel's origin in the Gate made much more sense to me. I mean, she originally one of Valdie' spirit shard (with incomplete memory) that resides in the old diary. Having her start as a sentient being inside Ginny instead of solid body from the get go sounds logical to me. After that, you can apply a selection of method (such as a special amulet like Silverstone28001 suggested) later on.
This way Ariel can discuss her existence crisis with Ginny (and possible with Hermione and Luna) and develop her character step-by-step.

Her origin is prettymuch the same this time around... the big difference is that I'm not giving her an easy physical form thing just yet, so she really can only interact with Ginny.
... Hmm, I think I have an idea of what the next chapter's going to look like, though not how to transition to it...

I think the major thing that bugged me about this time Ariel was how casual Madam Pomfrey could see her as if she had materialized in the outside world. Not to mention how out-of-character Pomfrey seems to know about Equestria's magic on par with its native high scholars.
If it came out of Lyra, I won't bat an eyebrow. Since she already demonstrated she can see lots of things with her magic sense.
