Oh hey, new comic book day!
For whatever reason I thought this was coming out at the end of the month, but it's nice to be wrong sometimes. So, I went ahead and picked the latest issue up (along with an Immortal Hulk trade as a cover story) and here we are!
Once again, the issue's broken up into two different standalone vignettes, each focusing on a Pony + A Robot.
The first one's probably the best, as it's about Fluttershy and Discord crossing paths with Soundwave and his tapes. Because, you know, when doing your toy crossover bidness, you might as well get EVEN SILLIER, right? It's basically a dozen pages of Discord screwing around with Soundwave, while Fluttershy makes friends with Soundwave's 'pets.'
It's almost Bugs Bunnyish in how much Discord outclasses the Decepticons (what, being a chaos god and all), but still fun. Honestly the best part of this story is Rumble, who's just written as an idiot punk hooligan, and it's perfect. He doesn't get turned into a tree, though, which is a wasted opportunity.
The next story is even simpler-- Windblade meets Rainbow Dash, the two argue over who's the faster flyer, and when they agree to have a race, some Decepticons show up. A dogfight ensues, and the day is saved. Wee. Though really, the best part about this story is a single pair of cameos: MACH KICK AND BATTLE UNICORN.
Honestly, I'm surprised it took 'em 3 issues to bring these guys in, but what can you do.
All and all, this is proving to be a rather light and silly comic series-- but, I mean, that's kind of the point, isn't it? Though one could potentially argue that it'd be even FUNNIER if one played it straight and got progressively more and more over the top, but hey. I think IDW's writers and artists are just happy to play around in the pony sandbox, y'know? Should be interesting to see how the final issue wraps things up.
Did they have any references to the infamous Rainbow Dash vs Starscream Death Battle, where the little pony won handily? I feel like if they didn't something has seriously gone wrong.
Fluttershy befriending the alien hunter-killer drones. Of course she did. She's Fluttershy. She's terrifying.
Wait we have an acutal mlp/transformers crossover!

Nah. Starscream showed up in the first issue. Arcee and Rarity sent him packing. (Also Rarity is totes gay for Arcee but that's understandable).
Also, how dare you-- the tapes are not DRONES. They're their own robots!

I've given up on this series having any sense of continuity at this point. I was hoping for a more connected story when this was announced, but it's clear that's not what they were going for. I was looking forward to seeing how Windblade and Rainbow interacted considering we saw them meet briefly in the first issue.
But this comic decided to ignore that and just act like this is their first time meeting. Also I might be wrong but I think they changed Windblade's design slightly? Not sure.
So yeah don't make my mistake and expect the comics to focus on a single narrative, just try to enjoy it for what it is.
