So I have an idea for a MLP fanfic and want some opinions on it.
Called Mr. Maple Takes a Holiday it woudl be about Mr. Maple, a quiet syrup-making pony whose never done anything exciting in his life. in fact he's never gone 10 miles away from his small family farm (though can it be called a family farm when he's single?) or the town of Quiet Meadows. But one day after a paperboy calls him boring Mr. Maple decides he is finally going to go on a vacation! He is going to travel around Equestria and see everything he's always wanted to see.
Except... his note to the milkmare gets blown away so she thinks that something terrible must have happened to him and the police are called to try and find him. And when he arrives at the first town Mr. Maple hits a cart with his tail, not realizing that it made it rocket down a hill and crush a kidnapper to death, saving the heir to Equestria's richest grape maker's family. And so it goes... Mr. Maple happily going about his vacation without realizing that, as he does normal things, everyone in Equestria begins to slowly assume he is an immortal god alicorn who is righting wrongs and dealing out justice.
That sounds like a interesting idea. I want to see more!
Sub plot of the god of Fate in the background tweaking things and laughing? Or some kind of explanation for why everything keeps working out for Mr Maple?
But it does sound amusing to me.
I want more of this.
This idea. . . It's. . . It's. . . SO GOOD! Mr. Maple decides to branch out, leafs the farm to take a sweet vacation, and accidentally rights wrongs. And if the topic of his family farm comes up, so to will the question in the post.
He may find himself in a sticky situation occasionally, but as long as he sticks to his roots, he will find the answer, or at least a passable excuse.
It may turn out that he is the one pony that the Equuish Inquisition did not expect.

I like it. It kind of reminds me of Flash Sentry in Jeweled Pen’s “Where did you come from?”
After mistakenly telling a foal that Princess Twilight has a harem, Flash chose to run away to avoid the fallout. He puts on a black cloak, large sombrero, and a fake mustache and calls himself Chad. While on the run, he ends up in a number of adventures and earns a big name for himself.

It's funnier that its just ponies having misconceptions that cause his legend to grow. For example, in Manehattan he heads to a crowded restaurant to watch a hoofball game and sits down next to an old stallion, the only seat available. They get talking and the old stallion asks what he is doing and Mr. Maple explains he just wanted to take a vacation, live a little, because you never know when you might die. He leaves... and the Old Stallion calls a meeting of all of Manehattan's crime families. He is the Godfather and he has decided it is time to step down. He tells his son he trusts him and even though his son wants them to branch out into more legit business he knows his son will lead the family right, all thanks to mr. maple. The son is utterly touch and quietly calls off a hostile takeover he was planning and decides to bond with his estranged dad.
So later on, when Mr. Maple is someplace else and without realizing it angers a psychopath criminal. But right before he can be killed (not realizing he's in danger) the new Godfather's right hand pony, who happens to be in town, grabs the psychopath and has him killed because "The old stallion would be so sad if the nice Mr. Maple died". And that begins to spread the legend that Mr. maple is untouchable so he ends up meeting all sorts of criminals who are utterly polite to him because "You don't mess with Mr. Maple" and the Equestria Secret Police, led by Twilight's dad, believe that Mr. Maple is some great criminal mastermind and begin to follow him... and that leads to more fun stuff.

Its a type of story I love that I term "A Series of Misunderstandings and Miscommunications". Someone says something very casual, thinking nothing of it... but someone misunderstands and that leads to rumors and the more things the first person originally did the more it snowballs.

Pretty much.
An example is there is a Harry Potter story where he accidentally becomes a Ministry Inspector. And the Goblins ask him for a meeting and gives him a bag of gold and he just shrugs and takes it. He doesn't realize the Goblins are trying to bribe him and expect him to demand more gold, as that is how these things go. Just accepting? No, he is up to something. So they offer him more gold and he actually says that's too much! He is plotting something! So first they send an assassin to kill him while he is walking around London... assassin is hit by a bus. Then they send one while he's at the zoo... assassin is bumped into a tiger pit by Harry (by accident) and killed. Finally one is teleported right behind him... while Harry is on a broom flying in a race. SPLAT!
Goblins assume Harry knows of their plot to overthrow the Ministry and is annoyed with their assassination attempts so they call the whole war off. And Harry has no idea he saved the day.

I've never seen Mr. Bean so I can't say if it is or isn't like that but it is part of my favorite style of Storytelling where there are misunderstandings and such that snowball into insanity.
There is another Harry Potter story I've read, Make A Wish, that is a perfect example of what this story will be like. Harry, after Sirius' death, decides he is going to tour Europe because he feels he's doomed to die anyway. As he travels around he keeps stopping Death Eater attacks but goes by the name Mr. Black and by the time he gets back to Hogwarts everyone believes Mr. Black is either a) an immortal Dark lord who repented and saves lives to redeem himself 2) Merlin's old teacher who sank atlantis because they hated muggles 3) Death Himself having decided to take mortal form.
Its all Harry just walking up to people, having nice conversations, never realizing he is talking to important/famous people.
The same with Mr. Maple. He is just a regular stallion. Polite, excited to be on a vacation, but his actions begin to affect Equestria so that, by the end, everyone believes he is the greatest hero in Equestria history... and he just thinks everyone is so nice and friendly.
That is the biggest thing for me with this: Mr. Maple never realizes what he is doing. He's just a decent stallion having a fun adventure. He's nice, sweet, patient, gives out advice... but he's in the right place at the right time.
