Mimic Slime Story: Ch9 · 2:10am Aug 11th, 2020

How to continue when all your options have been exhausted and even the inhumane nightmare is scared?

All Chapters

Creatures had a word for what had happened. They called it a fuck-up. I knew the concept of fucking, it was how the creatures made more creatures, so I wasn't sure how it related to things going badly—but I was perfectly fine using the term. "This is a fuck-up and a half."

My accomplice snorted and actually laughed. "You can say that again. Shit, you melted his clothes. Can you, uh, do clothes?" It was standing back now, adjusting its clothes to try to hide the scar on its arm.

"This creature was confident and forward. It liked female creatures enough that they led to its death." I looked at my accomplice, ignoring the mess of the bed that was, even now, slowly melting further.

"I've got an idea, but I'm already hating it." My accomplice let out an exhalation of breath that I knew signified this was something it definitely didn't like. "This guy—you, now—is famous for bawdy acts and shows of manliness. So, my idea is—"

"Are you sure?" I asked. "This seems very conspicuous."

"Conspicuous is literally this guy's bread and butter. Be loud, laugh at anyone who contradicts you, and if they get in your face about it, punch them."

"Do you need to have so much exposed?" Looking over my accomplice—as it lay across my form's shoulder—it's chest was bare and pressed to me and its dress was in enough pieces that it's rear was reasonably exposed.

"While they're looking at my tits and ass, they aren't looking at the big red burn on my arm. You've got this, Tess." Its confidence was notable, but I didn't feel the role fully.

Nonetheless, I engaged as much intelligence and knowledge as I could and bent them toward carrying out my accomplice's plan. Wearing not a single piece of clothing on my form, I tossed the door open and marched out into the main area of the building.

Every creature turned their heads to look, but it was just as my accomplice had said—they were looking at it and not me—except for two, our target's allies. "I wore the other one out! This one still has some life in her, though, and I think I'll take her to-go!"

The big ally grinned, clearly avoiding using its intelligence, while the scarred one still looked nervous. Nervousness worried me since creatures tended to intermittently use either all their intelligence or none.

"You 'eard 'im, Flake, we're gettin' out of 'ere," the big ally said.

"It's Flame, you oaf." The scarred one looked nervous still, but stood up along with his larger companion.

Walking over to the bar, I nodded my head back toward the room. "Dear lady, I appear to have broken the bed in your fine room, and the other lass did a runner out the window when I threatened a second round of fun with her. I'd hate to make an outlaw of her, so how much do I owe?"

"The bed…" the female creature looked a little stunned. "T-Ten silver."

It was probably steep, but a large number gave me a chance to add something. "Perhaps keep this little event quiet, eh?" I winked at the creature as I slid the ten silver pieces over, knowing it'd check and find the gold piece underneath them.

It did. "Oh. Oh yes. No one has to hear about this."

I gave the female creature my form's best smile and turned for the door. This was my accomplice's cue.

"Put me down you fucking oaf! I can't believe you—" My accomplice let out a shout as my form's hand connected with its bare rear.

"None of that now. I paid you for a good time, now you will make good on that." That my accomplice hated this was beside the point—it was working. Despite the pain I was still in from the burns, and despite my accomplice's own pain and loss of dignity, we were getting away with this.

The big creature took the lead and headed out of the building with myself and the scarred man following. Every now and then my accomplice would make a complaint, for which I had to use my form's hand to smack it.

They led us all the way to the warren of a building that served as the Children Of Anarchy's headquarters. There was something I'd started to notice about the scarred creature—it looked perpetually in fear. Fear of its allies.

Once inside, it was time to move to the next step. "Now to take this lass and teach her some manners." But I also had a quivering bit of knowledge that my intelligence told me could be exploitable. "Flame, I have some things to ask you before I get to that. Come with me."

The look of relief on the male creature's face told me I'd guessed right insofar as they were not friends with their allies. Still carrying my accomplice over my form's shoulder, I walked beside the scarred creature while letting it guide me to my new quarters.

When it stopped at the door and looked at me expectantly, I knew something was up. "What'd you do with Talon Claw, and how do you look so much like him?"

"Inside. I won't talk of it out here."

Inside, I set my accomplice down on its feet and waited for the scarred creature to close the door. "You don't like it here, do you, Flame?"

"What did you do to Talon?"

"We killed him, disposed of the body, and my friend here is taking his place." My accomplice started trying to adjust its clothing to cover more of itself. "This is the only damn cult in this stupid city that isn't either a god's playground or a fucking insane mess. Was Talon your friend?"

"N-No. He was the worst of the bunch, but he—" The scarred creature was using a lot of intelligence right now. It was obvious in its face that it was working over knowledge to adjust to recent changes. I readied a knife in case it wanted to do things the difficult way. "If you keep paying me what he did, I'll stay."

My accomplice froze in its efforts to recover its dress and turned the singed and scarred man. "What exactly did you do here?"

The scarred creature looked confused. "I'm a mage. Talon had me use my powers to aid him, and he had me teach him some simple magic. Mostly small fire spells. I can—if you pay me—teach you both." Its eyes kept shifting to look at me in particular, though it did glance at my accomplice too.

"Deal." I was quick to agree mostly because having it in my form's building too long would be suspicious. "But you will tell us if anyone is suspicious of what we're doing."

"What are you doing?" It asked.

My accomplice stepped closer to me and put its arm around my waist—pulling itself closer to me. "The usual, but here's a more fun thing for you to do. Find the person here that you hate the most. Try to set them up to look bad. We'll take care of the rest."

The scarred creature looked shocked, then hopeful, then excited. A smile spread over its face that looked genuine. "I-I think I will like—well, whatever you're doing." It left the building in a considerably better mood than it entered.

"His complete loyalty is just a random meal away," my accomplice said.

Oh joy. What's better than a shapeshifting ooze full of horribly potent acid? A shapeshifting ooze with horribly potent acid and wizard training. There's no way this could go wrong.

Depends entirely if the shapeshifting monster is even capable of this form of wizard training or not. Personally, I'd say yes, but it'd take mimicing the human form to a new level-from that of a very good fake to almost indistinguishable-to realize the full potential for magic.

Then again, I'm a fan of magic being possible for most beings to learn, but being something exceeding difficult to master, plus there likely being a very physical component about it (chalkra channels? Magic circuits? Nerves or veins conducting magic? Ambient mana being taken in and condensed and spread by a circulatory system? Lots of ways to go about it.)

A lot of worlds make a distinction between divine magic that only the blessed have access to, and arcane magic that anyone can learn. I wonder if trying to lead a cult without any divine touch is going to be an issue.

It seems that, ooze aside, all the people in this world are human. Is that true?

5333483 Mostly. Approximately 10,000 years before this point, a group of gods arrived from another world with humans as their followers. These New Gods use their humans as a method of terraforming—redesigning and shaping worlds to be more useful to them.

There is several types of magic, but important aspects in this world are:

Magic costs. Power never comes without a price:

Divine magic sees the costs borne by the god involved.
Arcane magic sees the cost borne by the mage themselves.
Natural magic is when a mage bonds with a spirit of the natural world, and usually starts taking on aspects of that spirit or having the spirits affect them in other ways.
Draconic magic stems from a creature making a bond with one of the long-thought-dead dragons.
Titanic magic is—unknown at this point.

Of those, only divine magic won't leave the mage physically altered by the use of magic, though intrinsic knowledge of how magic works can mean a mage might be able to hold off the worst of the changes.

5333492
So learning magic might have some interesting implications for slime-kun.

At some point, I'd like to talk to you about a world and pantheon I've been working on. You seem to have a good perspective on these things.

5333505
5333316 This is mostly HiddenMaster's world. I've been helping out here and there with ideas, however.
