    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Hoers Fæme · 8:03pm Jul 14th, 2020

And lo, in the darkness of that most perilous age, the Year of our Lord 2020, as pestilence and wroth did grip the land, a writing-man strode forth unto the Barcast, slaying not less than a hundred and twenty minutes that stood before him. With his left hand he poured out a carafe of endless caffeination; with his right, he led a pone of stony gray, whose anger burned more powerfully than that time y’all got cut off in traffic. From Holder’s Boulder they yeeted all those who dared defile its sacred countenance, and with smoldering Arabica they resurrected the legion of souls who had fallen asleep...

EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: Hear the interview here! (Or here:)

Yes indeed: someone must have thought it’d be a good idea to interview me on the Barcast, because lo, it hath been made manifest!

Right back at ya, Rares

That’s right! Tune in this Saturday at 7pm Eastern / Xxm Whatever, and let the dulcet tones of my smooth, sexy* voice carry you away on a journey into imagination.** Better yet, feel free to ask a question at the link above! Want to ask something about your favorite story? Curious who’d win in a fight between Limestone and Rarity? And speaking of Limestone, how much art, merch, and plushies of her do I have up in my house?! You’ll never know unless you ask, and you’ll never get a better chance than this!

*: Smoothness and sexiness not guaranteed. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or may become pregnant before trying Barcast. Void where prohibited.

**: Passengers must keep limbs and relevant Socratic Forms inside Barcast at all times to avoid spontaneous defenestration. Prohibit where voided.

As for the title of this post: Moosetasm sent me the following classic after hearing the news. It’s well worth the listen if you haven’t heard it before, or recently:

Of course it’s also mind-blowing to realize that I’ve actually met Nowacking (who recorded it), as well as the Barcast crew, at BronyCon ‘19. Whether you call that horse fame or not (and I seriously don’t), it’s at least a reminder of the connection and community that’s still present in our fandom. Right now is a deeply weird time for me, not just in the world at large, but also in our home; we’re still in early days of navigating a significant health thing with one of the kids. Seems like most of my spare brain power (and then some) goes into making sure the family is as safe and stable as they can be in the midst of that. If that sounds myopic... boy howdy do I know it. But a lot of days, that’s kinda what I can pull off right now.

Renewing a connection to the distant world of not-that-long-ago sounds utterly invigorating. Maybe it’ll also help kick back open the floodgates of my unpublished work, which still both (A) exists, and (B) wants to get born.

I’m gonna have a blast on the ‘Cast, and I hope you have one with me. :pinkiehappy:

I don't always listen to the Barcast... and I may have a D&D session this coming Saturday. But if that falls through, I'll be there!

A ringing endorsement if I’ve ever heard one! :derpytongue2:

I wish you the best with your D&D session, except for the specific extent to which it would conflict with tuning in!

Now's the time to dye your mane.

D&D, eh? Color me interested.
