My Movie Review on Despicable Me 3 (Plus, a Bonus) · 3:02pm Mar 6th, 2020

Greetings, my friends.

This is your friendly film, TV show, and episode reporter here with another review.

Today, I'm gonna be giving you guys my take of "Despicable Me 3".

Here's the summary of it:

After failing to capture the devious Balthazar Bratt, Gru and Lucy are fired from the A.V.L. (Anti-Villain League). With Gru jobless, his minions urge him to go back to being a villain like the old days. Wanting to put his family first, though, his minions leave him and go rogue.

In the wake of Gru's misfortunes, however, he is suddenly approached by a butler named Fritz. He tells Gru that he represents his long lost twin brother, Dru, who lives in the land of Freedonia and longs to meet him.

After getting answers from his mother, Gru and his family travel to Freedonia to meet his brother. He then discovers that their father was a super villain, and Dru wants Gru to teach him how to be a brilliant villain like he and their father were. In turn, Gru struggles on whether he wants to go back to being a villain or not.

Meanwhile, Balthazar hatches a revenge scheme on Hollywood for canceling a show of his, Lucy struggles to be a perfect mother to the girls, and the minions go to jail.

What sort of hijinks and adventures are in store for these characters?

Well, let's find out.

Admittedly, before I saw this movie I had extremely low expectations. Despite my interest in seeing it, I didn't think it would be any good.

As it turns out, though...I WAS WRONG!

I'm not sure how many think the same as I do on this, but this was actually another one of the most fun sequels I've ever watched.

For instance, the direction by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, and the story by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, were extremely enjoyable.

The one thing I will admit is that the film seemed to have so many subplots than likely necessary, and that things seemed to get carried all over the place because of it.

Other than that, the characters did a brilliant job at driving everything forward, and the film team successfully helped everything connect together by the end. The overall humor was as fun as ever, if I may add. If the mission the team had was to be wittier than ever before, I'm proud to say "Mission Accomplished!". There was even nicely done emotion and heart to balance everything out, the particular elements being the bond between Gru and Dru, and the growing connection between Lucy and the girls as a family.

The animation of this film was well-done too.

It did pretty much have the same level as the second film, but the animators creatively extended themselves too. The character animation, settings, and the bubblegum bubbles were my favorite parts of it all.

The voice acting, casting, characters, and character development were incredibly well-handled.

Portraying both Gru and Dru, Steve Carell sounded like he was having all the fun in the world, making every moment he was given count and providing flawless comedic-timings along the way. Kristen Wiig likewise did a wonderful job at really getting into the character of Lucy Wilde, especially at giving her a newfound motherly side as the film progressed. To top it all off, each of the characters I just mentioned developed perfectly, the same with the girls and minions.

Trey Parker and his character of Balthazar Bratt were amazing additions to the cast, really. So many times, I couldn't help but note that he was obviously made to be the most ridiculous villain of the franchise and was not meant to be taken seriously. Yet despite this, Parker made something so fun and fully-realized out of portraying his character, savoring every piece of dialogue like he was tasting a delicious meal. The character himself was quite a fresh and unique successor to Vector and El Macho.

Finally, the music by Heitor Pereira was magnificently melodious.

Being the lone composer of this movie, I loved how he managed to push himself into making the music feel bigger than the work he and Pharrell Williams did for the two predecessors. Plus, the songs that Williams made for this sequel were quite enjoyable, and the use of classic songs like Michael Jackson's "Bad" were delightful.

In the end, "Despicable Me 3" is slightly flawed in terms of storytelling, but nevertheless...it's fun, and the filmmakers did an astonishing job at making sure it had purpose and reason to exist.

So, I rate "Despicable Me 3" 4½ out of 5 stars.

To Illumination: I know you guys are planning on doing a fourth installment of the series, and I'm happy that you obviously love the characters enough to do so. I hope you guys know what you're doing though, because I thought this was a perfect conclusion.

If you're going to do it, might I suggest giving exploration on the origins and past of Margo, Edith, and Agnes? Or having Mr. Perkins return as the main antagonist since he seemed to just disappear without a trace after the first film?

I'm asking this mainly because those are elements that I believe are worth making a sequel for.

Before I conclude this post, I'd like to show you guys the latest paint-by-number that I completed.

So, what do you guys think of the stuff I showed you all today?

I also visualized the film and I absolutely love it!

Also I really hope Illumination studio does a spinoff series for Balthazar Bratt. Because a villain like that deserves such a series!

The first time I watched this, I was very tired and was quickly convinced that Balthazar was just Vector and that he entered a Midlife Crisis and was going through a Millennial Hipster phase :twilightblush:

Did you see it anytime after your first try?

5215527
I have not yet, but apparently really need to:rainbowlaugh:

What’d you think of my suggestions for what they should do for a sequel, by any chance?

They are valid points and potentials for the 4th sequel!

Also, I'm surprised that Trey Parker was willing to branch out of his adult comfort zone for a role like Balthazar Bratt!
