NASA has announced the name of the Mars 2020 Rover today, and it is *drum roll* PERSEVERANCE!
And as you may remember from my earlier blog post this year, Perseverance was one of my favorites among the nine finalists of the Name the Rover Contest.
I'm sure Oppy is smiling right now, in its final resting place Perseverance Valley on Mars, as the journey continues.
But it's not just NASA. A whopping three rovers will embark on the journey to Mars later this year. So let's have a little overview of Oppy's descendants.
1. NASA's Perseverance Rover
2. ESA's Rosalind Franklin Rover travelling on the ExoMars mission in collaboration with ROSCOSMOS
3. CSNA's Huoxing-1 Rover
Godspeed, little rovers! May Oppy's Spirit watch over you!
Godspeed our little rovers! May Oppy's Spirit watch over you!
To Ranko, are ya planing on a sequel?
Godspeed you, brave explorers

I'm not ruling out the possibility of a sequel. But I do not have any concrete plans at the moment. Sorry.

It's alright bud, tho I look forward to when or if it comes out
They got a design now they know the reliability and capabilities and at least partial lifespan of, so going to stick with it until somone opens up a repair shop and global lift on Mars, manned, automated or otherwise?
Here's hoping one of these rovers has a backup battery and the tools to install it if they find Opportunity...or maybe just that they'll pull Oppy into a sunnier spot to recharge. Ya never know, that might be all he needs.
Mars, a planet populated entirely by robots. Time to get to Mars.
