Interview with Gnarl

by Nailah

“Alright, now tell me my dear friend, what inspired your username?

Response: I got it from a character from a game I enjoy greatly. He’s sarcastic, tricky and just all around funny. I took the user name ‘Gnarl’ to show, like the character, my break from the norm, to show that I don’t think the same as others.

“What drew you into Mlp?

Response: I was introduced to the show by my ex and have been an avid follower of the fandom ever since. What made me stay with the show and fandom was how welcoming it was. Most places I’d gone to before for different fandoms, didn’t really take well to new comers.

“Who is your favorite pony and why?

Response: Pinkie Pie all hands down. Every time I see her on screen I can’t keep a mile from forming on my face. Just something about her makes me feel better and the darkness of the world seem just a bit less so.

Also she reprisents the one element of harmony that I value above the others, Laughter. I love laughter, more so making other people laugh and smile. I’m an amatuer comedian and doing stand up makes me feel like I’m helping people relax and forget about their troubles for a while.

Pinkie does just about everything she can to make everybody’s day better, brighter, less daunting and it’s something I can relate to and have the greatest respect for.

“Favorite episode and why?”

Response: I don’t have a favorite episode. I love the show as a whole.

“What inspires you to write?”

Response: My mind can be a bit of a mess most of the time. So many thoughts and ideas zipping back and forth, bouncing off the walls of my skull, creating a creative din of noise. At first I wrote to try and quiet the noise in my head.

But as I kept writing I found that I enjoyed putting my ideas down on paper. The first real story I wrote was in highschool. The school was a combined one, grade, middle and high school all in ne building and we highschoolers were asked to write a halloween story for the 3rd graders.

We were given a choice of laminated picture cut outs of objects and things to base our stories about. I picked an extremely lanky, short wizard with a large beard and red robe with a large pointy hat that fell over his eyes. When I looked at that little cut out the noise in my head suddenly cut out and just seemed to focus completely on this clumsy looking wizard.

After just two days, I had typed over 50 pages for this character’s story, and I wasn’t even in the middle yet. I’d never felt so… excited and happy… Hacited? Excippy? ;p It was something that stuck with me ever since then.

“Tell us about your favorite story, and why it inspires you to write. It doesn't have to be mlp specifically!”

Response: My favorite story would be an Epic, which is five books long for those who didn’t know, by the author T.A. Barron called the ‘Lost Years of Merlin”. It deals with the years of the great wizards childhood, which is a blank piece of history. Merlins teen years are completely unknown.

The books, tell of a boy who is searching for his place in the world. He’s asking questions that I’ve asked myself more times than I can count. What’s the point? Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more? Who am I? The books show his journeies to discover who he is and how he finds peace in excepting the answers he finds.

My favorite quote from the author ecompasess this perfectly. “A life-whether seamstress or poet, farmer or king-is measured not by length, but by the worth of its deeds, and the power of its dreams.”

T.A. Barron

“Give us the background of the author! Tell us all about you. Well in a short summary.

Response: I’m a bit of a goob. I enjoy joking around, having fun and being silly. I’m the one the kids flock to when we have family get togethers. I’ve also been told I was born in the wrong century, as I know more about swords, old time battle formations and chivalry, which is derived from the french word for ‘way of horsemanship’ as it was a term for cavalry, so nothing about being courteous, than I do about modern stuff.

I also love games in general, board, card, computer, consol, I love’em all!

“Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Response: Yes, I’d just like to say a few more words. Strange, blubber, oddment, tweak. Thank you.

Thank you for allowing me the pleasure of interviewing you, you have truly been a pleasure to talk too. I hope you continue being awesome.

-Nailah.

Thank you for interviewing me. It was fun. Don’t forget to look at the world and smile at how silly it is. There is always a way for us to laugh and drive our problems away, all we need to do is keep looking for ways to laugh. Keep having fun.
