My Writing Setup · 7:13pm Oct 26th, 2019
Some of you have asked about my writing setup. Well, you're in for a surprise. I write on 20 year old computers. Why? Well, mostly because I'm prone to distraction when I'm writing and I don't want a computer that has internet. You can't get on the internet on super old computers because the network protocols are obsolete. So what do I use? For a desktop, I use a top of the line iMac G4 with a 20" screen. These are pretty rare and hard to come by these days. There's not even ONE of them on eBay right now.
For a laptop, I use an even older iBook G3 from 1999:
I use a copy of Microsoft Office:Mac 2004 Student & Teacher. I also have AppleWorks 6 (this was a Microsoft Office competitor developed by Apple in the late 90's). What I love about these old copies of Microsoft Office is they had a built in dictionary/thesaurus:
For those interested, the specs of the computers are as follows:
iMac:
- 1.25Ghz PPC Processor (This was the highest-end processor you could get in an iMac G4)
- 2GB DDR RAM (Maxed Out)
- 500GB Hard Drive (Upgraded in 2009)
- Mac OS 10.4 Tiger
- 20" LCD Display
- Wireless mouse & keyboard
iBook:
- 466Mhz PPC Processor (The fastest processor available in an iBook G3)
- 544MB PC100 RAM (Maxed Out)
- 10GB Hard Drive (Original)
- Mac OS 10.4 Tiger
- 12.1" Display
>using a flat screen
>processor in the GHz speeds
>RAM in the GB range
>fancy af setup

LOL. I don't need to go that ancient. I just don't want to have internet access while I'm writing because it's a distraction. And I first learned how to type correctly on this exact style of keyboard. My school had these keyboards. They SUCK big time. The keys are sharp and they cut your fingers when you miss (if you're typing fast enough). I can get up to 136wpm at my peak typing speed. The keys are also awkward to press compared to true mechanical switch keyboards and more "normal" modern keyboards. Still, if you type on these keyboards enough, you get used to them.
I like how Starlight is there to give you encouragement or offer a distraction because she is too damn cute in that corner. It's like why write when you can do something else!
