Despite My Best Efforts... · 12:12am Oct 20th, 2019
... something Varric from Dragon Age: Inquisition said is starting to sink in.
If you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death. ... If she had a nice afternoon and she took a nap, you'd stop reading.
I don't subscribe to that belief completely. After all, I hold no love for the fictitious villains that had no remorse when meeting their ends. But I've come to realize that I can't protect my heroes and warriors of justice from everything. Hardship makes a story more relatable, easier for some people to invest in. Not every story should aim to be Batman, but some bits and pieces of struggle and trials could help make the story more like a best-seller rather than a quick minute of reading before bed.
Then again, I've got a whole parody story making a joke of death, so what do I know? Maybe it's the difference between a sarcastic/sardonic story versus the more serious ventures. Guess I'll get back to this train of thought later.
......
Fuck, you're right. I love my characters, yet I've made them go through hardships more times than I can count.

They point is that they still survived and if they have die, at least it was a good way to do it.
