A JD Review: MLP Season 9 Episode 16 - "A Trivial Pursuit" · 8:22pm Aug 18th, 2019

The one where Twilight finally breaks.

We lost her, boys.

Oh, well. This was another weird one. This week's episode shows us that Twilight grows mentally insane over a simple game of trivia that shouldn't be taken too seriously. But, of course, Twi needs to, because that's so much more important than, you know, getting ready to run a country or whatever. No big deal. Not only that, but Twi takes it so far as to actually get her partner, Pinkie, disqualified just so she could win. Great job. :ajbemused:

Honestly, Twilight needed to grow up in this one. Yeah, the episode was super entertaining, and Twilight's faces are to die for, but... she's literally going to run Equestria in, like, one month. You'd think she'd be a little bit more focused on that than some game. Oh, well. Gotta have those filler episodes, I guess.

Joyous bliss I received in this episode.

I felt like I was losing my mind half the time.

Not bad. Not good, though. 7/10. What were your thoughts?

What do you mean "finally"?

We lost the poor little filly about five seasons ago. Which is also when they should have aired this out of place episode.

Well while this will be another controversial episode due to how a character interacts, I think this is definitely better than last episode.

One thing that helps is that it’s much more entertaining than last episode. Seeing the teams and interaction of the other characters really help this episode.

I also like unlike Dash Twilight didn’t need to be told that what she did was wrong. I also like that she was properly punished by not winning.

If you didn’t like Twilight in this episode the next episode is for you and does show how much she grows. The next episode is pretty darn good and more interesting then what the synopsis would make you think.

“Gotta have those filler episodes, I guess.”

I never really got fans who complain about that. (Not saying your complaining) Isn’t most of the series filler? Like at least 85% of it filler that you could probably skip to understand the seasons finales.

this episode started off great with the opening, then the MOMENT Pinkie pie entered the episode, I hated how Twilight was, like she fell into a massive horse troof of horse shit and became someone else... I honestly dont care how many great faces she made, her actions shut me down for liking this episode... it was almost as bad as last weeks episode... Id give it 5 out of 10. i liked freak out Twilight not sleeping freaking Spike out, and the fact she sleeps in a fucking DJ PON3 shirt is adorable... but not all the adorable funny faces in the world can save this plot. and yeah, she DOES need to grow up, cause, like you said, shes running a country soo-*Celestia is doing Royal Canterlot speak at a stupid buckball game* ok you made your point...

(this one is gonna be less precise/good/long cuz I am writting this at 5am and I am FREAKING tired)

Well , this episode ... I never mind a Twilight focused episode but I have to say that this one kind of reminds me (not in a good way , exept maybe the faces) of Lesson Zero (think it was that one) . This episode was way better than it so I won't compare .

I wanted to say things but my oppinion is basically the same has yours so I can't add that many things XD !

One thing I can add tho is that this episode contrasts a lot , and when I say a lot , I REALLY mean it , to another one that comes further in the season (no spoil since it's a leaked one from China) and both of them that close to each other just feels wrong ...

Since I have not that much too say appart from the fact that I really enjoyed that episode even if some momments weren't THAT great , let's get straight to your favorite momment :
The Cuteness Ladder ! Well , this episode , has you might guess didn't contain a great number of Cute momments , now if it was a Nightmare ladder on the other hand ... But sadly , it isn't so this episode collects a sad 3/10 making it officially the only episode so far with a less than 5 Cuteness ranking . Sorry guys , but nightmare fuel isn't cute.

This episode , while out of the ordinary , didn't stick out too much from the others , being stuck between the "normal episode" and the "unusual episode" doors , I will definitly watch it again , but it is nowhere near my top episodes , not even of this season alone . Making it gain a basic 14/20 , yes it is harsh but I need to remember you that it's the last season and they need to get all the episodes with a certain quota of awesomeness , especially in the second half of the season !

PS : Has said above , I am very freaking tired while writting this so if you think the review is total BS , just tell me and I'll consider redoing it because I am just dead right now XD

Are you trying to get me disqualified?! What kind of pony does that to their own teammate?! Oh, I swear to you Sunburst, if I flip myself over to the edge, I'm gonna... gonna...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

Me: SNAP OUT OF IT, TWI!

5108079 Season 4 was the age of Twilicorn. It was also the best season, so I ain't complaining.

5108097 Can't wait for the next one then.

5108121 Oh my gosh, I didn't even realize slept in that shirt. That's so cute! :rainbowkiss:

5108358 Get some sleep, man! :twilightblush:

5108434 I think you mean Mrs. Nesbitt!

like I said, only cute thing in the episode for me lol

Whenever Twilight's having a nervous breakdown, I always wanna grab a paper bag and shove it in her face, like "Breathe, dammit, breathe."

The thing about Twilight Sparkle is that it's 'predictable' that she would take something so simply and make a big fuss over it (Especially when it comes to tests). At the same time, I get how competitive she can get over a game especially if it's a field she's used to. Just as Trivia Trot means a lot to Twilight (And not just being the first mare to win three games), for me it's the same as how I feel around karaoke or even community softball as far as being so passionate about these events and want to be at my best yet I feel as if no one else tries to. At the same time, all these gatherings are meant to be about having fun and we all 'try' even though it's only natural for our instincts to get out of control. Although in Twilight's case, it's no wonder why people question if she's even ready to rule over a country.

As far as Pinkie Pie goes, I will admit I wish she wasn't meant to be portrayed as the pony who has an inconsistent count in answering questions. I get she may be easily distracted and maybe not taking things as seriously as her friends, though I do wish she'd understand that maybe these things 'do matter' for Twilight (Although let's face it, it almost feels like a repeat of 'Lesson Zero' on occasion). But what was truly unfair was how Twilight intentionally got her own partner disqualified just because she felt she was in a desperate situation and felt she deserved a better partner. It's just nice when Twilight realizes the error of her ways when Sunburst is pretty much the same as her and I will admit the PFF names Twilight and Pinkie have are cute. I personally prefer 'Twinkie' myself (Not just because it's the name of a popular snack).

Overall, I do think this episode was a 'slight' improvement from the previous episode, though I wouldn't go as far to say this episode is anything short of a classic. There are a few funny scenarios, a few callbacks based on the questions, and as someone who is a fan of trivia games I did think it was rather fun to watch (Reminds me of 'Disney Trivia' on a cruise ship a month ago). Still, the episode doesn't come without a few hiccups whether it's Twilight pretty much so desperate that she hogs the question time and Pinkie doesn't get the chance she can prove to answer a question that would sound impossible. Because those of us following the show, we KNOW Pinkie is more than just the comic relief, she's been able to find solutions to problems before, and even though it may take her awhile she does know a thing or two. So for me, I would have to say this was a 'passable' episode for me yet I still think it could've been better (Good thing there's still a few more episodes of the season left).
