Bronycon report · 1:16am Aug 7th, 2019
I went to a convention for a show which is literally about the magic of friendship, and managed to avoid making any.
GOOD
- Driving through the forest-y hills of Pennsylvania.
- Most of the panels that I got into were interesting, and sometimes entertaining. The writing panels were especially educational and fun -- it was great to see & hear some of the author's who's writing I love. The "industry" panels with folks like Andy Price, Cathy Weseluck, Bonnie Zacherle, etc. were quite interesting and made me rather nostalgic for when I worked in animation. (Then I remember what a soul-grinding, low-paying, usually-unemployed, nightmare it was.)
- Buying three of Georg's books. I'd've spent a lot more at the Bronycon Bookstore, but half the books were sold out by Saturday, and I'm terrible at remembering author & story names.
BAD
- Missing Thursday.
- CROWDS! Holy balls, the crowds! When I wasn't waiting in line for a panel, or in a panel, I fled through the bread-oven weather, back to my hotel room -- an oasis of loneliness which, while kind of depressing, was the best option. I get the feeling the con was oversold and under-controlled.
- That my 'patron' badge was pretty much useless for skipping lines to panels. There was no clear signage or directions on where to line up, and as a result I missed a few panels I really wanted to attend.
- It was over far too quickly.
- Having my car & cellphone searched at the border on my way home.
