    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Thoughts on "She's All Yak" · 6:20am May 17th, 2019

Hey, a Yak-related episode that's actually kind of decent.

Interesting thing, at first they didn't overdo the attempts to make Yona fit in with the ponies--if anything, it came off more as someone trying to learn about and participate in a different culture instead of trying to change who they were. Which honestly, I was perfectly okay with! The part with learning the dances reminded me of how my cousin took folk dance classes and then passed those lessons on to us, and the making food part kind of reminded me of how thanks to my sister-in-law, we have learned to make some Brazilian food, as well as share some of our American food with her. It was actually kind of charming to watch Yona learn the things and the Mane Six just helping her out (though I do question why there are just two dances? There was always at least five line dance options whenever I attended a dance, and every other song was just people doing whatever).

Heck, that ending with Yona sharing the Yak dance was actually kind of charming too (though wouldn't it have been glorious if that dance tore down the school, and we were free from worst gimmick?)--and it gets hilarious when you read this tweet and have the subsequent mental image:

I remember when that was one of the songs played during gym class in high school...

And then Yona showed up in that dress, and I was reminded of what kind of plot I was watching.

She did not look good in that getup. She stuck out like a sore thumb (especially since she was the only one dressed up; did anyone mention to her that it was apparently casual?), and oh my gosh, Rarity, you're better than that, you could have made an outfit work with her tones!

From that point, I just awaited the inevitable trainwreck and the "I like you for you" thing from Sandbar. Standard stuff, but at least it was harmless and kind of cute. Any stupid in this episode was brief and inoffensive, unlike the other yak-involved episodes where it's dragged out to annoying, boring, or insulting levels.

So... decent episode. Not amazing, but at least I only groaned once.

Yeah, definitely one of the best student 6 eps, which is a low bar. I think it's because they focused on one or two students instead of having all 6 share the spotlight.
