My Movie Review on The Three Stooges (2012) (Plus, a Little Something I Discovered Concerning Fluttercord) · 3:48pm Jan 29th, 2019

G’Day, Mates. AMU back with another review, as well as at the moment, trying to sound Australian.

(*clears throat* Excuse me.)

Today, I’m gonna be reviewing the 2012 adaption of “The Three Stooges.

Left on the doorstep of an orphanage run by nuns, three newborn knuckleheads grow up to be finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking janitors named Larry (Sean Hayes), Curly (Will Sasso) and Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos). When they learn that financial problems will soon force the only home they've ever known to close, the trio sets out to raise $830,000 in one month. Out in the world for the very first time, the three innocent bumblers additionally become embroiled in a murder plot and find stardom on a reality TV show.

Ladies and gentlemen! I know what you’re thinking.

I know that many of you have had certain experiences where every time someone makes a movie to try to recreate something from the old days, they end up failing miserably due to lack of good looks, storyline, faithfulness to source material, and so much more. But, I would like to tell you that unlike the others, this movie is a winner and comes out on top!

Everything about this film truly honors the Three Stooges filmography from the old days! The comedy! The story! Everything! Especially the filmography of Moe, Larry, and Curly, the most famous of the Stooges trio.

I will admit, the story and plot line likely isn’t the best, but it fits perfectly for our hilarious trio. The reason for it not being perfect is because there are moments in the story that are going to make you say, “Why? Why did this have to happen?”

Examples in particular include these:

At the beginning, it looks like the first couple featured was going to adopt a child named Teddy, but, it’s an immediate jinx when they pick Moe instead. But while they were on the road, Moe didn’t want to leave without Larry and Curly, so they just put him back at the orphanage and take Teddy instead.

When Larry and Curly want to know why Moe came back since they weren’t there to see him get dropped off, he lies to them by saying that they were giving him a list of chores to do and he didn’t want to do it because of being too lazy.

Even though those kind of things happened, I will let them slide by saying that they helped keep the plot going, be unpredictable, as well as create conflict, because those are things that a story needs.

The Farrelly Brothers I’d like to say did an awesome job at directing the film, and it’s probably their best one yet (depending on what their other films are like of course). The cinematography was amazing! It was because it gave the feeling that it was a Stooges film just like from the old days, but at the same time, it was something modern. The editing was pretty nifty too.

The decision to separate the film into three 27-minute long segments is also what I’d like to call a really smart move. It helped aid the plot into not making it feel too extended or jumbled.

The jokes and slapstick the film had were executed wonderfully, and the overall comedy it had completely lived up to the original Stooges works.

The directors even did a great job at ensuring that the acting from the cast were perfect, and they in turn portrayed their characters perfectly.

The best part of all in this film though comes from that of the Stooges themselves!

Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Will Sasso were awesome at portraying Larry, Moe, and Curly! The way they looked and acted for their roles made it seem like the real deal was in the house. They did themselves and their predecessors proud.

In the end, while the film isn’t perfect, it’s the best and most faithful adaption of an old-school show by far.

So, I rate “The Three Stooges (2012)” 4 1/2 out of five stars, mostly because of the questioning moments in the plot like the ones I just mentioned.

By the way, if you’d like to see an MLP and Three Stooges crossover, check out “From Repair to Despair”, a crossover where the Stooges and Equestria Girls meet.

To change the subject on everything, I started to figure out another reason for why I dislike Fluttercord (if you’d like to check out my other reasons, go to this blog).

Anyway, the reason I discovered would be that I find you can’t make a romance between Fluttershy and Discord without changing their personalities or what makes them unique as individuals. In this case, you can’t pair them without doing something like taking away Fluttershy’s kindness and making her the opposite of kind, or taking away Discord’s chaotic nature and eccentricity and making him the opposite of chaotic and eccentric. All in all, it’s another reason Fluttercord would never work.

So, what do you guys think?

I don't know. "Discordant Harmony" does a pretty good job making the two of them work. Also, I don't think Shy loses her kindness by being paired with Discord. She just gets bolder and more sassy. Discord doesn't really lose his craziness either, just his rough edges. Maybe you're just not a sassy!Shy or softie!Discord fan.

Fluttershy being sassy is definitely fun, and I like the soft side Discord has been given. It’s just...I just don’t think they mix well together. Something about it doesn’t seem to click.

Did you see the film review? If so, what did you think of it?

I didn't see the whole movie. :applejackunsure:

I actually enjoyed the movie.

As a Three Stooges fan myself, I was excited when they announced that this movie would be in theaters. Even though the movie wasn't entirely perfect, along with a few other things "besides" the plot, I went in knowing it was a slapstick comedy and almost everything about it reminds me of what I'd see in a Three Stooges short. Now when I heard they were doing another Stooges movie, only this time involving their younger selves... I will admit I'm a little unsure how that's going to turn out. But I'd be willing to give it a chance if it makes me laugh (Which isn't easy to do).

Actually, it’s a sequel with Sasso, Hayes, and Diamontopoulos set to return.

Are you familiar with the crossover I made, by any chance?

5004561
Are you sure? Because the one title I found is 'The Three Little Stooges' which is supposed to be a prequel to the 2012 film but featuring the younger selves. Although when I think about it, they 'did' say they want to start production on a sequel with the original cast but so far there hasn't been any further announcements. Worse comes to worse, it might never happen.

As a matter of fact, in regards to the crossover, I'm actually just starting to read it right now and the bits with the Stooges make me laugh. No wonder ToucanLDM was inspired to use their characteristics for the Diamond Dogs in that one video.

This sounds pretty good, I’ve never seen the show, but I suppose I’ll look into that someday. It doesn’t really sound like my usual preferred genre and style, though, but I might like it anyway.

About FlutterCord, I agree with Godslittleprincess, although I prefer CelestiaCord regardless of that.

I agree with everything Stooge!
"Theres too much iron in the water!"

I love that movie.

This movie's nothing like those pieces of dobunks like The mummy or Predator, in spite of mixed reaction critically. And again the ending was like some episodes featuring those lunkheads: they piss off someone, that someone berates or attacks them, and the three frantically flee into the horizon either running, vehicle or horseback, never to be seen as everything goes dark.

I think this movie will be a perfect starting point for those who are new to the Stooges.

I’ll keep that in mind if I decide to check it out someday.
