"Helplessness, Suffering, and The Power to Overcome" from Academy of Ideas:
"Introduction to Stoicism" from Academy of Ideas:
"Overcoming Nihilism" from Academy of Ideas:
Stoicism's conclusion of an objectively observable "Divine Principle" (AKA universal reason, perceivable reality, etc.) intrigues me in its contrast against the subjectivism of Marxist Romanticism (class-subjectivism) & Nazis' "steel Romanticism" (racial & national subjectivism).
As cited in that video about Stoicism, Plato recommends a reactionary life (based on reason), wherein one allows reason to guide one's reactions to events in a universe of Soft Determinism: "We must accept what happens as we would accept the fall of dice, & then arrange our affairs in whatever way reason best determines." As the narrator paraphrases, "These [softly determined] things can be influenced one way or another through our actions, but ultimately they are things outside of our complete control. The things which are up to us, or within are complete control, are the things which emanate from our mind; for example, our opinions, judgements, beliefs, desires, & goals." Balancing that reactionary lifestyle with an active lifestyle of constantly endeavoring to overcome adversity & extract advantage from suffering (to recognize one's potential) seems both difficult & correct.
