Brief Thoughts on Season 8 (Mild Spoilers) · 9:54pm Oct 14th, 2018

This has been an interesting season, both a triumph and a disappointment to me personally...

It's a triumph because it did contain vital episodes that progressed the overall mythology of the series ("Molt Down", "What Lies Beneath"). It also contained political messages that are extremely important for the current state of the world (Neighsay's "Pony First" ideology and Cozy's talent to manipulate gullible masses). It was equally a disappointment because there were some episodes where the writing was just plain terrible and characters looked completely stupid ("Non-Compete Clause","Yakity-Sax", "The Washouts").

Also, I was expecting much, much more when it came to the Student Six. The character development we ended up with was great, yes, but I was hoping for each creature to get individual episodes to explore their personalities further. If we get this in Season 9, that would be fantastic, but this should have been as part of their introductions. Not something to be done later in the likely final season of the show.

With "School Raze" as a truly epic finale, Season 8 ends on a good note. I'm looking forward to what comes next in the world of pastel ponies. However, I do still remain as a loyal "EG is better" type of guy. Wanna change my mind, Hasbro? Add the Shadowbolts and Sunset Shimmer to Season 9 :trollestia:

Add the Shadowbolts and Sunset Shimmer to Season 9

Something I'm sure a ton of us were hoping since day one of their introduction/redemption/fandom exploitations. That and oh, I don't know, THE DAZZLINGS?

... I'm starting to think we'll never get them back. :ajsleepy:

No, but I’m glad you enjoyed it.

I have to agree with you. I think the problem were the mane 6, they already have grown and now they are just being shoved on our faces.

The best episodes were they didn't have a role, episodes would have been better if they weren't around like the one were the student six go with Applejack and Rainbow because of the teacher of the month, those two brought the episode down really hard.

But then again if the mane 6 were featureless there were will be complaining about that.

I still have fingers crossed for a Starlight and diamond tiara episode as well as having Grogar.

I have grown to like the idea of the pony analogues of the Shadowbolts being made the first members of Princess Twilight's guard (assuming she ever musters one.) It'd be something to do with them.

And I do hope Sunset gets some kind of appearance in the series finale.

Sunset is EG's bulletproof vest. No matter how bad the writing may be, she saves it all.

To add to the constructive political parallels, there was also a potentially dangerous one. A child was banished to hell for eternity, presumably without trial, because she appeared too dangerous to be left topside. This rhymes with policies in the war on terror: where drone strikes could apparently kill suspected terrorists without due process, and many were detained in Guantanamo Bay for years without ever seeing a day in court.

>putting one of the best episodes of the season, "The Washouts", in the same list as "Yakity Sax" and "The Non-Compete Clause"

ok sure buddy :rainbowlaugh:

Though I agree with the political message stuff. It's important for a lot of people nowadays to know that being racist doesn't make you 100% evil and you can learn you were wrong. But if someone acts like a total manipulative, psychopatic bastard, just because it's a girl and has people blindly believe her doesn't mean she's innocent.

But IMO EqG was better around the time Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games came out, when the shorts and the specials started (apart from "forgotten friendship"), it all went rapidly downhill for me.

Personally, I've always enjoyed EG despite Sunset. Before Forgotten Friendship, she has always been really bland and boring to me, and FF elevated her to being sort of good. Even now, she's never what I watch EG stuff for, just something that is included in the package.
