Well, Not Sure I Want to Ask This, But... · 9:23pm Jun 23rd, 2018
...has anyone ever received comments that just drive you up a wall?
No, I don't mean criticism (though it could overlap if the criticism is not constructive). I mean someone just saying variations on the same idea (or complaint) over and over, each time you update a chapter, as if you didn't read their first comment. Or those people who are essentially trying to be 'backseat drivers', trying to implore you to take the story in a direction you don't really want to, or speed up a conclusion that you know should take its time. Or you just want them to shut up about how horrible the bad guy is and how they should be punished, and wish they would comment on the events of the chapter itself.
...yes, I've gotten some comments that are getting on my nerves. I'm not a big fan of repetitive comments expressing the same idea whenever I publish a new chapter... with new events... with other subjects that could be talked about but instead they keep preaching on how evil the bad guy is and how I should punish him and how his evil plan needs to be stopped.
Look... if you're gonna comment about the bad guy, can you please be more creative? And no, not in your ideas on how he should be punished! I mean, more like a variety of things concerning this guy beyond just 'evil'. For example, looking back at The Rock Farmer's Daughters, reading the comments about Cortland were fun, because they range from the "DIE, CORTLAND!" to the observations about his character (good and bad), to the criticisms about his character, and to the reactions to his eventual fate.
I have gotten a variety of comments on other subjects with this story (and hey, there are a couple of people who did make interesting observations about the bad guy), but whenever this particular story's bad guy is brought up, I just end up groaning because I know the gist of what they're saying.
Comments are always welcome, but give me a variety, man!
TLDR.
I hate reading comments where someone just says how much they want to horribly murder the antagonist in a story, they're my least favorite kind. It really feels jarring reading stories about loving and tolerating ponies, and then switching to comments below said stories where blood-thirsty readers crow for the suffering of the bad guys, and angrily inform the author how the hero should have easily dispatched their enemies.
Yeah, I know the feeling. A long time ago I tried my hand at writing a fanfiction (that I've since deleted--*shudder*) on Fanfiction.net, and 90% of the comments were variations of "Plz update". Nice as it was that they wanted it to update, it got a little annoying, so I actively avoid leaving comments of that caliber.
