Quick Season 8 Thoughts (as of midseason finale) · 5:48pm Jun 16th, 2018
Because I just recently managed to catch up to the last few episodes of My Little Pony due to reasons, I decided to give my fairly quick thoughts on each one of them!
School Daze: There is a school now? New characters, though! I like them. Low stakes, but fun for the expanding of the mythos. Movie is canon too. PS: Yona is the best, shut up.
The Maud Couple: Someone just as plain as Maud, and Pinkie is a hypocrite. Really fun episode.
Fake It 'Til You Make It: Funny seeing Yellow Quiet go into different personalities, but the gimmick got old at the halfway point and just killed the episode.
Grannies Gone Wild!: Jesus christ this episode title. It was fine, kinda cute. Skittles is still the top cunt even with the elderly, but she clearly tries here.
Surf and/or Turf: CMC gets called by the map to the movie's hippogriff land. Predictable, but alright.
Horse Play: Celestia is best shit-tier actress. Really neat episode finally focusing on Celestia as far away from her sister as possible. Big approve.
The Parent Map: 2nd favorite of the season by far. Starlight and Sunburst focused, and this is just fun with them together.
Non-Compete Clause: Awful. Worst episode of the season by far. This kind of episode doesn't work when characters have literal children around them to make them look even more immature than usual.
The Break Up Breakdown: Plain favorite by far. Went a way I was NOT expecting an episode of this show to go, but then again, it has gone down that path before, so why am I surprised? Also, Discord wants to go down the 'bros before hoes' mindset.
Molt Down: Meh episode. Start is alright, but the ending feels kinda forced. A character literally pops into a scene out of nowhere without reason at all.
Marks for Effort: CMC were good here, but this one was fucking weird. You think it's going to go down a certain route, but it just ends up subverting your expectations. Trust me, that's not a shiny endorsement. Starlight is great here, though, for as little as she included.
The Mean 6: Fun-ish, but ultimately pointless. It feels like setup for future episodes, and clearly wasn't meant to be given so much impact as a midseason finale.
Verdict: Alright season in general, but the show is clearly becoming crowded with characters they are barely using. The Pillars from last season haven't even appeared at all. Some characters are being used like they would be used back in season ONE. Not a good thing when the status quo has changed as much.
And there you go! Just to show you guys I'm not dead!
I respect your opinions and agree with most. Non-Compete Clause was garbage.
But, Molt Down was really big for me as a Spike fan because it verified my headcanon I've had since 2013 that he was a teenager and would get wings. But, some elements of the episode were useless, like Rarity's hearing issue. That got annoying real fast.
But, frickin' A, Break Up Breakdown was a glorious episode. Funny, witty and very real. Miscommunication is a bitch and seeing Spike and Discord as bros was a great moment that I didn't know I needed.
4883784 I definitely agree that it was good for Spike (and a needed status quo change for him) but I guess it wasn't too interesting. Then at the end of the episode, Twilight just pops in out of nowhere! Like, I know plot conveniences are a thing, but that was ridiculous.
And even if I didn't mention it as much, I loved break up breakdown for the same reasons. It was also super cute aaaah.
