Making a Fallout-themed escape room: ideas needed! · 5:43am May 2nd, 2018
I got voluntold that I'm putting together a summer camp type of event through my college, for local high school students and/or their families.
I proposed a Fallout themed escape room, with math/physics based puzzles. Because apparently I'm in charge of all the math and science departments.
I've never made an escape room before, and I've barely escaped from one. So, those of you who are fans of escape rooms and/or Fallout, please give me some ideas!
Thanks in advance!
I don't know how physics based this is, but you could have a gieger counter and make them have to figure out how many rads per second or something.
Escape from a vault probably, and you even have an excuse of the Vault experiment being the reason for how complicated it could get.

Current plan is they have to go into a Vault to get, say, a water purification device. But when they remove it, an alarm goes off that seals the door and starts a countdown until the reactor vents into the room. They'll have one hour to escape.

Interesting, but I have no idea how to do that practically.
You walk in and get shot in the head, and then a raider eats your flesh! :D Immersive!
You can do stuff with calculating resistance or voltage in simple circuits, providing a diagram with slots for values they can calculate (high schoolers should know the rules for it, but you can add a little cheat sheet on a door or something) in order to open little doors or something to collect fuses or unlock chunks to a more physical puzzle
You could also have them use magnets to move parts around under a plastic slab so they can't see what they're doing but have another teammate call out where to move it from a clear side, like to unlock doors, and the above electricity thing can give you one of two magnets that must hold items in place concurrently
EDIT: what kinda budget do you have?

I've got $300.
I was planning on having books or other resources so that if a student (this is for high schoolers) didn't know something, they could look it up and teach themselves.

That's a pretty great idea actually! Depending on how much sweat you're willing to put into this I think cardboard, foam and spray paint can go a long way.
Atmosphere can be difficult to create on a budget. I'll keep tabs on this exchange!
