2200 words and counting. Productive evening. Gonna rip yall's hearts out.
Thinking I might discuss what changes I would make to bring WSY back into canon
As I see it, here are the major canon issues:
1) Spitfire's mom is alive
Solution: Scrap the uncle. Dad's out of the picture and Spitfire is running away from Mom. Don't worry, they'll obviously patch things up before season 5.
2) I was (as at least one commenter has pointed out) a little bit greedy in terms of making so many members of Soarin's family popular side characters. As a result, all three of them now have elements of canon backstory that contradict.
Solution: if I knew then what I know now, I probably would have made Soarin's niece, sister, and sister-in-law OCs instead of popular ponyville background characters
Seriously tempted to fix those things. Definitely won't do it soon. Have promised myself I have to actually finish the story before I do so.
Final thought: I put a remote village in the mountains with "Glimmer" in the name like 3 years before the actual show put a remote village in the mountains run by a pony named "Glimmer."

Just saw the "I'm Back" blog post. So I'm caught up now. Glad you're feeling better because you were clearly feeling... meh? i don't want to pry, but whatever it is, glad you are writing and enjoy writing.

Yeah, the show definitely likes to expand side character backstories for short term gain. I've only half chewed everything they've done with spits in what I've watched that has contradicted since season 2 because I much prefer the depth you brought to her. If you wanted to stick to your original vision and keep it "canon" as of season 2 then people would love the throwback (or maybe I'm just nostalgic is all). If you want to alter then I dont mind either. Still super psyched you're back!

Long version. We like a good comeback story. Most of us can probably relate in more ways than one.
I would say not to worry about what 'canon' has changed that doesn't align with your story. There are plenty of stories out there that don't match up with how things line up in the show. Those stories, and this one, are all still enjoyable as they are. Leave it, we all understand and that those pieces of the story were established before the show made their own canon. My vote, keep the story as it is. You can just consider it one of the many Alternate Universe stories that are out there.
Having said that, if it is something that is important to you to make the change, then make it. It's your story. You should be the one who decides what characters are in it, and what the characters backgrounds are. My opinions are just that, opinions. Hell, I'm not even a writer, what do I really know about it. If it's important to you, that's all that really matters.
I'm glad to see you back, and I can't wait to see more of this story. It was one of the few stories that I really commented or interacted with a lot. Thank you for your time.
