Chiaki Konaka, head writer for Digimon Tamers, is interested in a sequel.
And honestly, I'm divided.
From the moment Tri was announced years ago, I was immediately excited for what that could potentially mean to further the story of Tamers. To me, and many, many others, it will always be the shining gem of the franchise, and with Konaka at the helm, I would be very stoked to see what he does with the one loose end; that promise to be together again.
But, on the other hand, Tri has not exactly worked out, and for the past few years, I've also been witnessing something similar with the sequel trilogy to Star Wars; sequels that don't live up to their predecessors, or even tarnish what made the originals so unforgettable.
Mr. Konaka, I will never forget the characters you gave us. During the original run in 2002, I absolutely fell in love with Takato, Henry, and Rika, and that trio will forever be one of the best parts of my childhood. But unless you can absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, create something that equals what you made 16 years ago, leave it in the past. I would rather continue to look back with rose-tinted nostalgia goggles than see the best anime I've ever watched brought down by an unworthy narrative or production cycle.
I have yet to watch Tri, but I've been hearing two warring camps over it. A Tamers sequel might be tricky, unlike Adventure which left a huge gap at the end of its original run, Tamers doesn't have much that could lead to a sequel. Trying to make one would be like trying to catch lightning in a bottle, twice.
The problem usually is expectations. Sequels also must improve or add on to the original predecessor. Perhaps touch upon more about Rikas dad than just the one digimon runaway trailmon movie? Perhaps show the Tamers reuniting with their digimon to finally bridge the gap between the seqeul movie and the last episode.
Plus, what new card combination/evolution would they even show? Would love to see that.
It the end even if he does make the sequel and it sucks. Don't let it ruin what made you love it to begin with.
