Okay, here's the skinny.
I'm going to be introducing one of two characters very soon - like, in the next couple of chapters soon. Now I have two scenarios worked out in my head and I don't know which one to use.
So I'm going to leave it to you to decide what pony shows up.

Cadance or Shining Armor?
One will show up soon, one will... meet a horrible fate later in the story.

I say Shining Armor. Aside from having somepony in the group who isn't a mare, I think he would stand up after Cadance's death and wreck shit. Besides that, he also has his lsbff beside him.
Rule number 1 in writing sad stuff, don't kill only one of a pair of siblings. People will legitimately hate you.

As far as your reason for Shining Armor being in the group you make a good point, however, I didn't mention whether either of them would live or die, just that the latter would suffer a horrible fate .
As far as your last point, I'd say that it depends on how you go about it, but that's just my opinion.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the end-all-be-all death of a character...

Seriously though, it honestly won't be anything too over the top and it won't come up in the story for awhile, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I sayeth Shining should get the better end of the stick. Totally_Original said that he is an undeveloped male chracter, but that just it.
You can shape him to be a better character, however he suits your story. Except like killing Twily. That he wont ever do. But thats just my opinion
