    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Oppa Limestone Style! · 6:24am Jan 17th, 2018

For reasons that would later become clear, back around Thanksgiving my wife steered a conversation first toward Pony in general, and then toward Limestone Pie. She wanted to know why I like her so much. I responded by describing her canon crankiness and talking through some of my headcanon about how that fits into the Pie family's dynamics.

Her response: "Oh, so she's basically me."

"B... but that would make me..."

Yeah. So without intending it, my favorite pony ended up being the one who's probably closest in overall temperament to my wife. :rainbowlaugh: I suppose that's kind of daunting to realize on the one hoof; I mean, Limestone is Limestone. But on the other hoof, she and I both found it kind of sweet. Everyone has their quirks; but as much as my wife can be prickly at times, there's something very deep and true about her that I've always found worth it to work to bring out. Her family background has also had a huge influence on how I write Limestone & fam, which I get an annual refresher on every time we go back to visit their farm.

I mention this for a few reasons.

First, my wife got me a little Limestone plushie from ShadowKrafts (pic sadly not online) for Christmas, which was just the best thing. :rainbowkiss: She must've picked up their contact info at Ciderfest. It's awesome. But beyond that, I realized it was time for some change on my account. I'd had my old avatar (by BluegrassBrooke) for almost 2 years, and my profile page had been relatively static for at least that long. This year seemed like a good time to put my dearly beloved, highly irascible muse(s) in the spotlight.

I think 2018 is gonna be a good year for my writing. I could be wrong, of course; I felt optimistic about 2017 as well, but then it kinda went off the rails at a couple points. 2018 has also, thus far, featured me playing catch-up with RL because of dropping off the face of the world in November and December to finish drafting To Serve In Hell. But hey, that's drafted, and I've got some (IMO) good stuff on the Writeoff site that needs to make its way over here. Plus whatever other new Limestone stuff I write this year, because that's gotta happen.

I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things. It's happening, just slowly. :ajsleepy:

So that makes you Zephyr Breeze?

Blasphemy! :derpytongue2:

In reality, it probably does; I have about Zephyr's level of practical usefulness on a day-to-day basis. I never understood the Limestone/Zephyr ship, though; I wouldn't expect her to find him all that charming. For what it's worth, I shipped her with Flash Sentry in my story Heavy Rock, and I still feel like the ship makes sense once you push past how unlikely it seems on the surface.

that's pretty sweet :3

Let's hope 2018 is a good year :)

Hope springs eternal. It's going to take a lot of work, too, but I hope to make 2018 Great AgainTM.

Man, you must have quite some sister-in-laws.

4776011
I do indeed. If you look across both the sisters and brothers, pretty much all of the canon Pie personalities are represented somewhere. :derpyderp2:

I think we had this conversation last week. :trollestia:

4777711
We did indeed! Truth be told, though, I had already typed up a version of this even before it came up in our conversation. I had planned on timing this all a bit better but then RL happened. :derpytongue2:

RL is destroying my face right now. I’m already failing my New Years resolution to have the next chapter done before February. :raritydespair:

4777743
Stay strong, man. The year is young and RL is important to deal with.

Something else I'm realizing is that I got into Pony at a time when I had relatively more free time, even though it felt like I had a lot less than I was accustomed to. But now I realize that I had more time to hang out, work on stuff, and just generally immerse myself in it all. Now I really don't have that, in part because Pony helped me get through the hard parts of the situation back then, which opened me back up to certain RL things that I really struggled with.

... I swear I had a point there, but I lost it. :derpytongue2:

Same here. I had the time to read monsters like Fallout Equestria, there’s no way I could just drop the time on a 100k+ work right now.
