Season 7 Song Rankings (From Worst to Best) · 1:38am Nov 1st, 2017
Well, we didn't get a lot of new songs this season, only five of them. This was because Daniel Ingram was busy working on the songs for the movie, which is why Season 6 also had so few songs. So, how do the five new songs we got stack up? You're about to find out. But like always, this list is not official by any means, it's the result of my personal opinion. And as always, I mean no disrespect to Hasbro or the DHX staff.
5. Best Friends Until The End of Time (From: All Bottled Up)
Reason: I'm not sure what exact genre this song was going for, but I just don't care for it. My biggest pet peeve is that this song was really crying out for Spike and Starlight to be included in it, especially since they're supposed to be part of the main group. But nope, they're excluded. I do like the fact this song gets acknowledged as existing in universe, and it sports some clever visuals. But it really doesn't involve anything clever, it almost feels like something you'd expect to see in a season finale.
4. Flawless a.k.a We're a Work In Progress (From: Fame and Misfortune)
Reason: Part of this song's fault is the episode it's a part of, but even baring that it feels like a last minute inclusion intended as a shield against criticism. The first line or two is actually rather clever, with Twilight calling out the fans for assuming the journal entries alone indicate who she is. But then the song just ends up becoming preachy and repetitive. Yes, maybe we're wrong to expect absolution perfection, but most of us don't harp on the show just because it doesn't meet our exact expectations.
3. The Battle for Sugar Belle (From: Hard to Say Anything)
Reason: Vincent Tong got two songs for two different characters this season, but this song's big claim to fame is that it's the first time Big Macintosh is singing as himself and not someone else. The "Seeds of Love" metaphor gets a strong boost after you consider "The Perfect Pear" (so it's more than just an out of context innuendo), and just like with "The Spectacle" there's a huge take that to modern pop. This time with its interchangeable lyrics and melody, and over reliance on autotuned singing. But hey, Feather Bangs' pop songs are a lot better than most of the cheesy, forgettable pop songs I hear on the radio nowadays. And just when you thought that part of the fandom was dead, lull and behold, it got a TF2 parody.
2. Blank Flanks Forever (From: Marks and Recreation)
Reason: Vincent Tong definitely does a better job singing as Rumble, which is probably part of the reason why he got the role in "Marks and Recreation". Of course, the big appeal is the jazzy, big band feel to the song in a day and age when jazz and big band are all but dead and buried. Yeah, there's a questionable bit about hooves snapping like fingers, and it's obvious that Graham Verchere's age is showing on Pipsqueak here and in the episode itself, but those are just minor nitpicks. This song is so catchy, and it's boosted all the more when you realize that Rumble had a much better reason for hating cutie marks than Starlight Glimmer did. Funny thing is, at first I thought one of the lines went: "You need no mark, so why keep tryin'?", but it turns out it's actually "Don't need no mark, so why keep tryin'?". And quite a few people cracked jokes about how they expected Rumble to get a cutie mark at the end of this song. Bet you can all guess what tops this song though.
1. You're In My Head Like a Catchy Song (From: The Perfect Pear)
Reason: Do I even have to say it? What can be said about this beautiful song that hasn't already been said multiple times? I could go on and on about everything it does right, but I'd only be repeating what everyone else already agrees on. I'm not sure if Felicia Day has any prior singing experience (I'm guessing she does or else she wouldn't have been recruited) but she more than proved why making her a guest star was the right call. And it looks like we now know where Applejack picked up her guitar playing skills from, so that's something else she picked up from her parents.
And there you have it. Come back tomorrow, when we'll update the Mane Eight ranking in regards to how the second half of Season 7 treated them.
I personally rank them as follows:
1. "In My Head Like a Catchy Song"
2. "We're Not Flawless"
3. "Best Friends Until the End of Time"
4. "Blank Flanks Forever"
5. "Battle for Sugar Belle" (ranking the two parts separate would put Feather Bang's parts above Blank Flanks Forever, while Big Mac's parts would remain in last)

Pretty close to what I had. Only thing that was different was I couldn't stand the Battle for Sugar Belle.
what would happen if the Flawless song DID work?
