In Dark World, Princess Cadence DID make an alliance with the Storm King (desperate times, desperate measures), and after almost getting petrified himself by gorgon renades (and using his henchmen as equine shields), this SCARED Discord into not even TRYING to expand his territory as long as the Storm King lived...
As to weather Storm King made any attempts to take Queen Cadence's magic for himself, who knows? It certainly wasn't recorded in any of the history books. Better question is if he could have at all.
Sadly, Tempest Shadow changes loyalties as soon as she learns Discord COULD restore her horn for real... But Even with her power restored however (and nearly going 'mad with power'), she didn't last long in a one on one fight Queen Cadence (having already rejoined with Chrysalis).
And there is no one in the afterlife who wants to try and help her get out of Tartarus and realize her sins... because as far as she's concerned, at least they were HER choices that got her put there...
Storm King died of old age surrounded by power and luxury loved by his subjects. He was remembered as a lord protector against Discord. With Queen Cadence quickly taking over his assets the moment he kicked the bucket and keeping Discord 'contained'.
I find it hard to believe the Storm King could ever be loved by anyone. Being betrayed by his (abused) minions is basically his defining characteristic.

Actually in the comics he talks about having a pizza party with his mooks.
4689252 That's a good point. I wonder if he just really loved his Yeti followers, and didn't care about non-Yetis, or if he only hated ponies or something. It's a shame he's from the south pole and not the north, I would have loved to have seen how he gets along with the Yaks.
