Part 35 of The Lawyer and The Unicorn is well underway... · 4:10pm Sep 12th, 2017
And I expect it to be ready by this weekend. As is my tradition with adult fiction, the story is going out with major fireworks in a two-part finale followed by an epilogue. Some of those fireworks I've hinted at already, but some...
Funtimes follow, but allow me to get a bit reflective right now. When I first started this story, it was intended as a seven-or-eight chapter 'bridgefic' that would lead to the eventual Turnabout Storm sequel. I did not even remotely expect it would continue as long as it has, or go the places it did. I explored one topic and then found I wanted to do another, and then the story starting pulling me in different directions as well. It started off as merely a crossover romance between two unlikely characters, took an unexpectedly dark turn in the middle act through The Heart's Turnabout, and now reaches its ending a third act that's the culimnation of all the growth and acceptance the characters experienced, and I'm able to do a lot more with them now for it.
You know, I've been told that TLaTU is my least accessible story, and that's probably true. Turnabout Storm was anything BUT a niche fic despite the claims of at least one rejected review, but this one unquestionably is, simply because to enjoy it fully you have to know a) the Ace Attorney series, b) the Turnabout Storm novelization, and c) be okay with crossover clopfics. And yet, for all that, I consider it some ways my greatest success for garnering the readership and interest it did. For in the end, I think I pulled off not just one but TWO impossible ships, an epic Ace Attorney trial with nearly unimaginable stakes, plenty of worldbuilding and character development, and of course, plenty of varied clop that even broached at times on fetish themes.
And that's to say nothing of the fact that TLaTU even spawned an entirely new story franchise in the Firefly series, which has become one of my favorite things to write. That alone made this worth doing as far as I'm concerned!
The story has certainly given me grief at times, and the downvotes on it sting even if they were expected. But you know what? I don't regret any of it. My least accessible story is also my most accomplished for everything I did in it and everything it did for me. And it's for that reason I plan to cut completely lose on the final chapters and let my M-rated mind go to town. What will happen? You'll have to wait for this weekend to see, but I will say that the adult action will be divided into two major parts, one per each part of the two-part finale involving distinct themes and characters.
There should be something for everyone there to like. Watch for it and enjoy!
It is ill-advised to combine activities of those sort with fireworks.
