    EqD's Newbie Artist Training Grounds

As of writing this, today is the last day of Equestria Daily's "Newbie Artist Training Grounds", which I rather serendipitously stumbled upon days before this year's month-long event began, never having been aware of it before. Every day for the past month, I've been uploading sketches and drawings to my DeviantArt and submitting them to

    Random Drawing

I've always been someone who could sorta draw things, but generally only when directly copying a reference. So today, for some reason after being part of this fandom for years, I decided I wanted to learn how to draw these characters for the first time, as opposed to writing about them, just for once lol. So I followed some tutorials about general proportions and whatnot, and the first dozen or

    Brainstorming Session 2: Electric Boogaloo

I've been tinkering a bit with a Novel-esque story that's been in the works for quite a while, but have reached a bit of a writer's block with it. I keep editing what I have written instead of continuing the story, which I guess is good in its own way, but not so good as it pertains to eventually releasing the story for

Random Serious-ish Fimfic Ideas Brainstorm 2 · 2:48am Sep 11th, 2017

Here we go again. I'm gonna rattle off ideas again in an attempt to get some creative juices going. Some of these are gonna be uber-cryptic and vague.

- Pegasi across Equestria are suddenly losing the ability to fly for an unknown reason. Pegasus flight ability is directly tied to their self-confidence, so the unknown force/villain is somehow causing multitudes of pegasi to lose confidence in themselves. Would probably include Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo as main characters, be Adventure/Drama genres. This one is pretty ambitious though, not likely to happen.

- Something that involves a lot of awesome magical combat. Magical laser beams, explosions, teleportation, levitation, all that kind of stuff. Basically, I want to write an epic magical battle scene but don't have the story to go along with it yet. Hooray for useless brainstorm ideas!

- I tried writing one of these a long time ago and decided I didn't like where it was going, but...a mystery/adventure fimfic. What's the mystery? What's the adventure? No clue. The one I wrote awhile ago was kind of like "And Then There Were None" and the Mane Six are supposed to gradually be picked off one by one and murdered get lost. Again, here I go with a vague idea that's basically just "I want to write a genre".

- A Maud Pie Adventure story in which she goes on a quest to reclaim Boulder from a rock-napping.

- The Wonderbolts announce a program for recruiting younger pegasi in some sort of "Junior Wonderbolts" thing. Naturally, Scootaloo wants to join, but obviously can't pass the flying exam for entry. So what happens? Dunno. The only happy ending I can think of is that she learns to fly, but I'm not gonna go that route. So that means she can't join and the whole story is just depressing. Great idea...

- The Elements of Harmony are Twilight, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie and Applejack. But what are the Elements of Chaos? Discord? Why is Discord a random mixture of different creatures? Because long ago, Discord didn't exist and was instead six separate bearers of the "Elements of Chaos" that were combined into one creature. Why? Because separately, their chaos outbalanced the elements of harmony and were somehow combined (through some heroic effort) into what we know as Discord. This story would include that lore at some point, but would focus on the Mane Six tracking down the six bearers of the Elements of Chaos (which had been separated for some reason, making Discord not exist as "one" character but instead six random ones). Already, this story is ambitious as heck lol.

Well, that's what I've got I think. There's a reason I tend not to write longer, more adventurous stories. I always get bogged down by the larger scope.

Combine the Maud Pie quest for Boulder with the mystery genre maybe? Give it an old mystery style where she monologueing internally the whole time (Though her face obviously remains expressionless). Something along the lines of classic detective shows like Magnum P.I.

Title: Maud P.I.

Oh I like that haha. That'd be a classy story for sure, if I could pull it off. Thanks for that addition!

I mean, if you want fights and weappnized magic there's a series called Elements of Heroism. It follows the storyline of FiM but the author takes his own twist on it. It's great.

- A Maud Pie Adventure story in which she goes on a quest to reclaim Boulder from a rock-napping.

Sounds like fun.

The only happy ending I can think of is that she learns to fly, but I'm not gonna go that route.

Why not?

Also, I like the elements of chaos idea. Do I smell a Collab?

I'd definitely read it :rainbowlaugh:

You got a bunch of nice ideas. You should make more of these blogs.

I don't like the idea of writing a story in which Scootaloo "just" learns to fly. To me, she represents a character for kids out there who are physically disabled in some way, and to have her suddenly learn to fly would feel like something that some people couldn't realistically hope to achieve. If I write a story in which she learns to fly, there would have to be another element that makes it something more impactful.

This story I wrote shows an example where Scootaloo doesn't learn to fly, but still has an uplifting conclusion

And you've read that already (you commented). But, well, there it is anyways haha.

Collab? Doubt it. I'm kind of a lone wolf fanfic writer and prefer it that way, honestly. That idea is super ambitious. Maybe one day.

Thanks, I'll try to blog more often. I find it really difficult to write real stories though. I almost exclusively write one-shots because when I try to write longer stories I reach a point where I lose focus, and then end up with a handful of unfinished stories :facehoof:

4664886
Well, I'm pretty sure you could do that in that Wonderbolts story somehow.

How would you write a story with Scootaloo learning to fly that doesn't feel like she just...learns to fly? Sure, maybe she wasn't able to fly because she lacked confidence in herself or something sappy like that (written better of course), but it doesn't feel good enough for me. I've thought about writing a story in which she learns to fly a hundred times, but so far the best idea I've been able to come up with was the story I linked where she doesn't learn to fly, but realizes she's meant to teach others how to fly. What would be the add-on meaning to her finally learning to fly? I just don't see it being anything other than a happy ending for the sake of happy endings. I'd love to hear an idea that somehow makes it more meaningful, though. But it would have to be really good.

I'd recommend reading through this fic: https://www.fimfiction.net/story/189797/keeping-your-promises
It's a bit long, but it does have possibilities for how Scoots can fly without just "learning how".

I'd try summing it up, but that would take away the meaning of the possibilities, at least I think so.

4664912
Ooph, 58k words? And it's a sequel. It looks pretty good though. I suppose I ought to read it, as you've enticed me rather well with what you said. Maybe it'll inspire me to go on a different route with that sort of story for Scootaloo.

4664915
While it IS a sequel, I think it gives just enough information that you could enjoy it without having read the original.
I certainly go back to it more than the original.

you should make a beach story with Applejack and Apple Bloom.

For the Wonderbolts idea, you could have Scootaloo learn to fly on a floating scooter. That way she can still be disabled but start doing things that other pegasi can do. I personally like the idea.

4664916
While I haven't read that story yet...I did come up with this:

An older Scootaloo eventually learns to fly and gets accepted into the Junior Wonderbolt Academy. However, things turn sour when others don't appreciate her lack of ability...and also that Rainbow Dash is the captain in charge of new recruits.

I'd completely gloss over her having learned to fly. The story would take place in a future where Scootaloo gets accepted into the academy...of which the captain is Rainbow Dash (who would be accused of favoritism, accepting a rather lacklustre candidate to be in such a strict program). So, that way I'm not writing a "Scootaloo learns to fly" fanfic. I'm writing a "Scootaloo still has to deal with being a sub-par flyer, in addition to the complex dynamic between her superior and friend, Rainbow Dash" kind of story...

Still completely up in the air, but it's one idea for something more serious and longer I could write. I'm thinking it would mostly be a slice of life drama with a healthy dose of comedy. It'd definitely be one of my longer stories if I wrote it.

Definitely sounds like an interesting take.
And one I don't think I've seen all that often.

4666015
I've always shied away from stories that are alternate universe or "future" type stories. But this one wouldn't go that far. The setting would be isolated at the academy, essentially, and the time jump is only so I can focus on what Scootaloo would deal with after gaining the ability to fly...since that's not really a simple thing you can gloss over in a chapter.
