    EqD's Newbie Artist Training Grounds

As of writing this, today is the last day of Equestria Daily's "Newbie Artist Training Grounds", which I rather serendipitously stumbled upon days before this year's month-long event began, never having been aware of it before. Every day for the past month, I've been uploading sketches and drawings to my DeviantArt and submitting them to

    Random Drawing

I've always been someone who could sorta draw things, but generally only when directly copying a reference. So today, for some reason after being part of this fandom for years, I decided I wanted to learn how to draw these characters for the first time, as opposed to writing about them, just for once lol. So I followed some tutorials about general proportions and whatnot, and the first dozen or

    Brainstorming Session 2: Electric Boogaloo

I've been tinkering a bit with a Novel-esque story that's been in the works for quite a while, but have reached a bit of a writer's block with it. I keep editing what I have written instead of continuing the story, which I guess is good in its own way, but not so good as it pertains to eventually releasing the story for

I've always been someone who could sorta draw things, but generally only when directly copying a reference. So today, for some reason after being part of this fandom for years, I decided I wanted to learn how to draw these characters for the first time, as opposed to writing about them, just for once lol. So I followed some tutorials about general proportions and whatnot, and the first dozen or so attempts were shit. But once I got the basic body shape and proportions down (at least in one general perspective), it started becoming more fun.

Then I tried to do faces, and they were shit again. But eventually one turned out alright, which is this one:

Most of it was done without a reference. Just the tail and hair mane. Hope you enjoy  Part of me kinda wants to see if I can make a short comic or two someday.

*Edit with another one, this time from a more perspectived angle:

The front hoof is weird but I'm just trying stuff for fun :twilightblush: One thing I'm already learning is how to position the eyes. I kept drawing them too high up, or not having them on the same level (or close to it). Realizing that they are ginormous helped to put them lower on the face. I'm already noticing that the left eye should be slightly bigger and lower. There's also some weirdness going on with the eye that's further away, but I'm just sketching to get a feel for things. It's hard to know when the outer line should be part of the face, or part of the eye itself.

**Edit with another, this time just trying to go fast and try a different character and facing the other direction / looking upward:

Her hair looks weird, but that's her own fault IMO.

**Edit 3 lol. I wanted to try an actual scene of some sort and try some more interesting body poses:

It's on a notecard for some reason. No reference except her hair and the squirrel-ish thing. Also she's an earth pony because I haven't figured out how to draw wings yet.

That’s pretty good, all things considered! :pinkiehappy:

Thanks! I definitely wouldn't show the ones I drew earlier though lol. Actually, I was kinda hesitant to draw them bigger because that seemed harder, but I think it actually helped more.

Wow, you draw a lot better than me! It's pretty nice really.

I used to mess around with drawing a lot more growing up, mostly random whiteboard doodles of exact reference images, so it's definitely not starting from scratch haha. I've always really appreciated visual artists though, and am kinda jealous of ones who can make such beautiful art and pose characters in any way their mind's desire, which kinda led me to give this a try :twilightblush: Thank you! And also thanks for doing all those translations of my stories, it's cool to see them spread around the world.

I tried a few times as well, but I never got the body structure right, let alone their faces or mane. But yeah, it is fun nonetheless.

And I can guess that Fluttershy one is a scene from Forest Trees And Morning Tea, right? It's very lovely.

I suppose it is, haha. That wasn't intended. I was just trying random poses and it made sense. For what it's worth, this tutorial clicked with me in lots of ways:

It's from a con like 7 years ago but it's great.

Thanks for the video. I haven't watched it thoroughly, but I can see it is very informative and fun to watch. He really got a great sence of humor and a nice adorable voice. :yay:

Yeah I noticed that as well. Very charismatic.
