My Little Planeswalker Update: Possible Chapter 2 Rewrite · 7:16am Aug 17th, 2017
So my newest fic, My Little Planeswalker, has gotten a lot more positive attention than I anticipated that it would, since it was never intended to be anything more than a side project to slate my thirst for writing as I worked out ideas for my other two major projects.
I've received some constructive criticism on the second chapter though, saying that some of the conflict felt forced, and as a result I'm thinking of taking the chapter down and doing a brief rewrite to make it feel a bit more natural. I don't have a whole lot of ideas for to make it work better, but I'll keep you updated if I decide that I've figured out what I'm going to do.
My most popular crossover started the same way. It was supposed to be a couple of chapters to spotlight "Hey, these two shows both have six elements that symbolise the power of cooperation, with a kind of weird sixth one", a light-hearted break from writing actual books … then it ended up being a full-length AU series, with unexpected chunks of darker-and-edgier.
Rewriting is a tough choice. Once you start down that path, it would be easy to end up constantly rewriting the same few chapters, trying to make them perfect. And the more you change the early parts, the more chance there'll be a noticeable change with the one that comes next, so you end up having to change everything.
If your chapter 2 doesn't stand up to the rest of the fic, it could be worth doing. But don't get carried away; early instalment weirdness might put some people off, but delaying new chapters while you work on old ones will bother more people.
I'm got this fic in my to-read list now; put off starting it because I'm way out of touch with the M:TG canon. Not sure if that'll affect my enjoyment or not.
(and the pedantic bit of me has to point out a possible typo; you seem to have "slate" instead of "slake" in this post)
