I Will Not Celebrate Meaningless Milestones

So wrote Bart Simpson on the blackboard for the Simpson’s 100th episode, in 1994.

And it seems an appropriate sentiment to echo here, having been on this site for a year. I got into the show in earnest when I sat down and binge-watched it from season 2-4 starting on 24th June last year, after which it became a bit of an obsession, and I then started reading fan fiction. I created this account on 15th July. I posted my first blog entry on 26th July, explaining who I was and what I’d written previously in other fandoms. And on 8th August, I posted the first chapter of my first story.

So sometime around there is a one-year milestone, depending on whichever anniversary you think most important. An anniversary, after all, being the time taken for our planet to orbit our sun, which is in itself an otherwise arbitrary period making one wonder why we celebrate things like birthdays at all.

Here are a two more pointless milestones: Firstly, as of two days ago, the total amount of words I’ve written for the MLP fandom, as well as being larger than the combined total I’ve written for other fandoms, is now larger than that of the first Harry Potter book. It’s not particularly relevant, and it’s hardly impressive next to the word counts of many, many other authors on here. But it is weird to think that I’ve written a book’s worth, without any thought of making money from it. Obviously a lot more goes into an original book than just the act of writing, and we can safely assume that my equivalent original book wouldn’t have sold as well as the Philosopher’s Stone. Still though, I found that odd. Particularly as someone who once dropped plans for a Harry Potter fan fiction work when I realised that I’d essentially be writing seven novels that could never be monetised, which a project that big felt like it ought to be. Whereas now I’m 1/7th of the way there, and that thought has never slowed me down.

And finally, about a week ago, my character-based word count (for both internal thoughts and internal thoughts + dialogue) was topped by someone/somepony other than Rainbow Dash for the first time since January. And it’s for a character that has yet to think or speak in anything I’ve published so far. Which is, exciting, or something?

Anyway, I hope to have a new short story ready in the next week or so, something actually good to celebrate being on here for a year with, rather than just a dull blog entry. The story was the second or third idea I ever had for a MLP story, and it sat as a one-line description in the ideas section of my notes document until a few weeks ago, when I finally decided to give writing it a go. After that, there are a few things brewing, and I’m starting to get the itch to dive back into TSTMYLI as well.
