The Eternal Dilemma of the Unemployed Fanfic Writer: Minor Detour In Plans · 8:53pm Apr 24th, 2017
"I've been doing pretty well at writing so far. I should get to work on that story I told everyone I'd start."
-"There's a contest going on. You can join."
"No, my fans expect me to be working on something now. I said I'd do it. It wouldn't be professional of me."
-"You're not a professional, though. At anything. You can use the exposure."
"Don't tempt me, Frodo! I am a writer of integrity, of good moral fibre."
-"But there's free money if you win."
"Err, well, when you put it like that... no, no! What are the odds of me winning anything?"
-"You've managed to do pretty well on contests before, remember?"
"Irregardless!"
-"That's not even a word, darling."
"Irregardless again! I don't even have an idea for an entry yet, no outlines, and it's due within two weeks. By which time, need I remind you, I have another interview?"
-"But free money."
"No, I can't. I mustn't."
-"It's the Scootaloo group, though."
"I... now, that doesn't make any difference."
-"The rules say you have to give her flight. Isn't that, you know, your schtick?"
"There may be some precedent, or plural of such, but still... my readers expect me to hold my word."
-"You realise they might expect you to join this contest, just because it's within your area of experience, right?"
"... Damned if I do, damned if I don't, then?"
-"In true chaoist fashion, darling, you're going to Hell in every religion, might as well have fun."
"But I don't have time, the prompt is too hard and complicated to do well in that timeframe. I can't just make something up on such short notice. What is the prompt, anyway?"
*psh* "That's it?"
-"That is all."
"I hate feeling like a sellout."
-"You're only selling out if you win. So technically, you're either a successful sellout or a loser with integrity. Either way, silver lining!"
*sigh* "Twi, git my quills."
So... yeah, thinking of joining the Scootaloo contest, got a little bit of a concept floating around so far. Initially I was going to involve her mother, but figured that'd be kind of insensitive for something like that. Besides, too predictable. I can do better. Think I can make you cry over donuts?
The Orphanhooves Social or Orphan-off fic is still in development, outlining stage. So work on that will be slowed down, delayed by about two weeks due to both this and the job interview coming up.
And hey, if you want to join, go for it. More good Scootaloo stories are always nice, especially ones where she doesn't get *insert ramble here*
Err, ahem, sorry about that. Don't want to get too political here. Have a nice, relaxing song instead.
Cracker out.
(And yes, this had a bunch of emoticons originally. For some reason they're not showing )
All the best authors get into it for the money. Go for it.
