My Thoughts On Beauty And The Beast 2017 · 10:47pm Mar 22nd, 2017

I just got done watching the new Beauty and the Beast movie and I have to say that I enjoyed it quite a lot.

It seems to be getting a lot of negative reviews for some reason. The Nostalgia Critic for example hated it. He had this huge rant about how much he hated basically everything about it. But I personally loved it.

If I had to pick out some things I didn't like about the movie it would probably be Belle's character who seemed more reserved than the animated version and the fact that the first half of the movie seemed a bit rushed. It would be nice to have an extended version of the first half of the movie with some added scenes that help to establish a few of the characters a little better.

It was also kind of weird that they left certain scenes out. Like for example, the scene where Gaston tries to marry Belle but she rejects him in front of everyone. I thought that this added to Belle's character and showed the audience that she has a mind of her own as well as a lot of sass. But the live action version doesn't include it.

On the other hand, the movie at the same time added a lot of scenes that helped to develop the friendship and romance between Belle and the Beast. It also extended a lot of the songs to add subtle details about the scene or characters which I thought was a nice touch. So at the end of the day, I don't really mind that they left certain scenes from the original movie out because the new scenes made up for them in a lot of ways.

At first I wasn't the biggest fan of Belle's characterization in the new film. But then I realized that she actually acted more like a lady of the time period because of her reserved character. By the end of the movie I ended up really liking the new portrayal of Belle and I thought it fit in with the overall plot of the movie.

The castle servants were just as charming as they were in the animated film. And the Beast was a lovable jerk, just like he was in the original movie. Everyone pretty much portrayed their roles just like they should be represented. Some characters were even better in the live action than they were in the original film. For example, I think that Gaston's friend, LeFou, had more characterization than the original movie. And strangely enough, Gaston did as well. You could really understand both of their motivations for what they were doing throughout the film.

The Beast got a well-needed back story which helped the audience understand why he became a self-centered jerk in the first place. And the film also spent some time visually showing the audience how he had come to be cursed by the enchantress. There was a small line in the narration of the live-action film which helped to explain why no one had remembered that a castle used to be in the woods, which I thought was an excellent touch. According to the live-action version, it was because the enchantress made the villagers forget about the castle and prince who resided there. This actually made a lot more sense than the animated version, where everyone just seemed to accept that a random castle appeared one day with really no explanation to how it had gotten there in the first place.

Some negative things I have heard people say about the film is that the sets looked a little cheap, the story was boring, the characters seemed off, and Belle was a lot less interesting than the animated version.

Personally I thought that the sets, effects, costumes, and other details of the film were amazing. I thought that the story was very interesting and it followed the story of the original animated version while at the same time adding some new scenes. The actors and actresses portrayed their characters very well, including the Beast, Belle, and the castle servants. And while I wasn't the biggest fan of the live-action version of Belle at first, her character grew on me as I watched the film.

So all and all I really enjoyed this movie, even though most critics are giving it like a C+ rating or lower. :/

Chances are that if you liked the original animated movie and have an open mind to watch a version that just adds a few more scenes and songs, you will probably like the new version quite a lot.

But it does have more romance than the original version, so if romance isn't your thing, you probably won't enjoy it as much as those who don't mind watching romance in some form.

At the same time it does have a lot of action and quite a few dark scenes so even if you don't like the romantic aspect you might still like it for the action scenes or even small tidbits of comedy thrown in.

I would definitely recommend watching the movie if you already haven't done so. Try to go with an open mind and judge the movie for yourself. There are a lot of critics bashing it so it's hard not to go into the movie without very low expectations. But try to give it a chance anyway. And decide for yourself whether you agree with the critics or you end up liking the film as well.

I still haven't watched the recent live action versions of any classic animated Disney film.
Haven't seen the live action Jungle Book, Cinderella, or any of the others. Not really sure that I'm going to, either.

4468265 I've seen all of the live action versions. I really enjoyed the remake of The Jungle Book. Cinderella was okay, nothing too spectacular. Maleficent was interesting. Beauty and The Beast was very enjoyable. Out of all of the live action versions, I probably like The Jungle book and Beauty and the Beast the best so far. But when Disney makes the live action Mulan, that will quickly become my new favorite out of them all. :P

4468269 That's a cute song and animation. :)

4468269
Scratch21 sounds very similar to other bands I like. I think I'll be listening to more of their stuff.

I'm just very suspicious about new Disney movies anymore, especially after *ugh*... John Carter of Mars.

I still haven't watched it, but I think it looks good.

If you haven't heard, the movie is banned from several places here in the US.

4468281 What is John Carter of Mars?

4468425 I personally thought it was an excellent film. I enjoyed it a lot. :)

4468428 Why is it banned?

The Nostalgia Critic is a pretentious loudmouth who deliberately goes against the mainstream to look like he knows better. If you liked it, then that's all that matters.

4468456 I did happen to like it very much. :) It took me back to my childhood when I watched the Broadway version. And I also watched a version of it that was on ice (I had a light up rose that I took to that show and it was a lot of fun). In my opinion it is a big improvement over some of the other Disney live action movies. So far The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast have been some of my favorite live action movies. I can't wait for the live action Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan. I'm even looking forward to the live action Lion king. It kind of makes me wonder what they are going to do with it.

Sci-fi based off of some Edgar Rice Burroughs books. Not very well done.

4468442 The scene where LeFou was singing "Gaston" you can see that he winked. The wink that LeFou gives during this lyric leads to innuendo of a team being sexual orientation which lead controversy in Russia and Malaysia. As far as I know, the movie is currently banned in Kuwait, along several places here in the US.

4468631 I never knew that Disney made a film based off of that.

4468645 I honestly couldn't pick up on any sexual innuendos in the whole film. And even though LeFou is apparently supposed to be gay, you couldn't really tell that either.

4468870
It's a rather poorly done film. Be glad you haven't watched it.

4468928 I haven't even heard of it. :rainbowlaugh:

There's probably a reason for that.

4468950
Don't watch it. It's terrible.

4468964 I will definitely avoid it. :P

steven crowder talked about the guy they made gay, and how he was an absolute monster in the original... but then it seemed that the writers realized this, and since they can't have a gay badguy, they changed it with one line.

if you're wondering who this guy is, it's my profile pic minus the nazi hat :twilightsheepish:

4472362 I actually enjoyed LeFou's character a lot in the remake. He was more sympathetic in it and his character arc made a lot more sense than in the animated version.

4472369 fair enough. i haven't actually seen it myself.... and i probably won't. Unlike crowder, musicals aren't really my thing :/

4472431 Fair enough. I personally like musicals a lot so I really enjoyed the film. :)

4475611 You should give it a watch and let me know what you think. :)

I think I will Lyra :)

4483829 I am doing pretty good, thank you. How are things going with you?

4483851

good to hear. and I'm pretty good.

4485022 Yay! I am happy to hear it. :)
