Progress Report: Chapter 50 · 11:00am Mar 21st, 2017
You're all probably wondering how I was able to shove out the last couple of chapters so quickly, but this one is taking forever. Well, there are two major reasons for this. Remember, that the duel has already been completely outlined, so it's just a matter of transcribing it into the story. THAT, however, is where the first problem arises.
You see, writing descriptions of monsters is actually pretty hard. I can create cards and outline duels like an absolute boss- okay, that sounded arrogant, but I feel I have a right to be proud of my work. It took effort and most of it is amazing. But when it comes to describing the monsters, sometimes I have trouble putting words to details. The Timelords especially are proving troublesome, given that they all share a general theme but at the same time are so wildly different. Writing that Hailon has four arms is easy. It's the general flow of shapes on each Timelord. I want to convey how different each one is from one another.
In the same category, I also have to come up with descriptions for cards that either haven't been played yet but already exist, or for cards that I've created. You'll be seeing some new Granel Parts, which means I'm going to have to around choosing sea creatures to base them on. Why is an EARTH Attribute machine using sea creatures as the basis for its parts' designs? Wisel had land and air creatures. Skiel had air and water creatures. But what the heck is up with Granel being all ocean? I never really understood that.
Now, the second problem is actually not at all story related and is kind of silly when you think about it. My new obsession is YGO Duel Links. Seriously, that game is fun and nostalgic as heck. Voice acting for each character is present- in English, it's done by the 4Kids actors! Dan Green is Yami Yugi and Yugi Muto! And while the card pool is pretty limited- there are no Synchro, Xyz, or Tuner monsters- it also contains cards from further generations that would have fit perfectly into the original series. Things like Wonder Balloons from ARC-V, the Sphere series from the GX manga, Blowback and Twin-Barrel Dragons, and all sorts of other stuff! If you haven't already, download it to your phone or tablet and start playing. There are upcoming events where you can unlock Yami Bakura and Yami Marik as playable characters.
This is what usually stops me from writing YuGiOh fanfics. But instead of getting some monster design description from the card picture, I have to describe it on my own since it's orginal cards that I made up. The effects aren't that bad, for the timelords just have zone say something like "all 10 of my timelords cant be destroyed and I take no damage" and then for each one he summons afterwards just have him say their second respective effect.
4465755 Describing the appearance of my own cards isn't really an issue for me. I just let my mind do its thing, and it almost feels like the monster is revealing itself to me. Describing the effects also isn't a problem. If there's a common theme, I'll be sure to make not of it when it's relevant, and I tend to not have characters repeat themselves when reusing effects.
Describing monsters with complex appearances like the Timelords, however, is hard, because I'm trying to stay faithful to the picture, but I don't know what words the artist would have used to describe it themselves.
