100,000 word milestone! · 10:09am Mar 16th, 2017
I can't freaking believe it! I made it to 100k words with something that I have written! Sorry I don't mean to pat myself on the back but, never did I ever think I would write anything, let alone, this much of something! So! In honor of this personal achievement, I have decided to let you all in on some backstory about Cal and Joey! Now, I know that I don't have very many followers on here, but just the same, I feel like this can serve as a living timeline for my work.
Caliber and Joey are loosely based off of Roy Waller and Frank Mercer, characters from the movie Matchstick Men. For those of you who have no clue what that is, here is the quick and dirty! Matchstick Men is a movie about two con-artists named Roy and Frank who, through various means, con people out of money. Roy suffers from a sever case of OCD while Frank is very much so a playboy in every right. Roy spent much of his life alone after a failed relationship, working people for money and trying to stave off his "ticks", all the while working with frank on small "Short Cons" for a living.
Now, before you get ahead of yourself and start thinking I just gave away how this story ends If you have seen the movie, don't worry, It's their personalities that have inspired the creation of Joey and Caliber. Well, with my own creativity mixed in of course. The personalities of Roy and Frank were the core groundwork for the two main characters, after that, Joey and Cal are based off of myself and my best friend jake as far a comedy, what they would do in a given situation, how they would react given certain circumstances, dialogue... You get the idea.
In the end, Joey and Cal are two unique characters that were pieced together and are ever growing and evolving. Now, seeing as writing is new ground for me, the next bit may be redundant, I have no clue if this is how other writers do things. I built both Joey and Cal as blank as I could with just a smidgen of backstory and habits. I did this so that they would have room to grow and change as characters. Just as Caliber is dealing with the very real world of responsibilities, Joey will have to deal with the very real world of... well you will just have to wait and see!
Joey has this very specific view of how the world should be and how other ponies should treat and do unto each others. Many would say that he has a "Jesus" attitude to the world, and those people would be right in a way. Joey is self taught, book smart and on a minor scale, OCD. This paints him as a story book hopeless romantic/fairy-tail/true love believer. To him, the worst things you can do to another is one, betray their trust once it is earned and two, break someponies heart when they have given it to you. This is compounded by his being brought up as a caravanner and living a life where he must meet many ponies but get close to none. He is, at mind, a loner and at heart, lonely. I feel that many of us have had this same feeling many many times in various periods in our lives. These situations are what has left Joey to wait for Zuri as long as he has, though he has had his moments of weakness where he tried to cast it all away.
Caliber, In a way, is a lot like Joey but with one key difference. His skewed moral code in contrast to Joey's. This makes for an interesting mix of characters to write about, not just because Caliber is fun loving, devil may care and promiscuous as all hell, but because they are "Identical opposites" (help me! no clue if that's the right terminology is!). Meaning that they are very much alike and have fun together, but on a fundamental level they are complete opposites that come to clash often. This leads to fights, break ups, impasses, ect... all that juicy stuff I love to write about.
I hope this has been a bit of a insight to the two main characters of the story, once I hit 150k I might just left fly with some interesting tidbits about Zuri! Thanks for reading!
