I'm Three Hours Into Resident Evil 7... · 12:55pm Feb 12th, 2017
And I can absolutely comfirm: A derelict plantation in the swamps of Louisiana is every bit as terrifying and unnerving as a secluded mansion in the mountains.
I even teased my friends about doing some jump-scare reaction videos, but I'm afraid those probably aren't going to happen; for the simple fact that Resident Evil 7 isn't relying on jump scares.
Instead, it keeps that overwhelming sense of dread on a much more steady high. So when an enemy busts through a window, door, or wall, it doesn't make you jump, but it does cause that sudden panic as you try to turn and run, or steady your hands as you desperately try to aim for the head of whatever is coming at you with what precious little ammunition you have.
How does the atmosphere of RE7 compare to the Silent Hill franchise as far as that sense of dread goes?
Interesting how RE went from being considered a disaster to a masterpiece over a single game.
4419121 Couldn't tell you, I haven't played any of the Silent Hill games.
4419143 Yep, I skipped RE6 because of the reviews

Some lessons have to be learned the hard way. Sometimes you just gotta crash and burn in order to figure out where you went wrong.

I like the theory that this sort of thing is just what the creators are best at, and hopefully they're done with their earlier plans, which seemed to be "write a hundred sticky notes with stuff that's popular in games nowadays and throw darts at them randomly".
Went back to play RE4 for the occasion. That Cerberus Door.
