NaPoWriMo 2016 Update · 6:06am Nov 12th, 2016
Well, NaPoWriMo 2016 is going pretty well so far. I've been able to keep up with writing 500 words or more everyday, with the exception of two days so far. I wrote enough on other days to make up for that slacking off, though, so I've got that going for me.
I've found that writing a little bit everyday works pretty well for me. In the past I haven't done any writing until inspiration strikes me. I sit down and bash out 2,000 words and then don't write anything else for a month. It's not very efficient, I must say.
I've tried setting a daily goal before but it never really worked out. I think that is because I set the goal too high. 500 words seems about right; I can manage that much pretty quickly, so it doesn't interfere with my other commitments and become a burden.
500 words is also enough for me to get the satisfaction of putting my thoughts down in words and leaving me with more to say, which makes me more eager to write more the next day.
What's a nanowrimo?

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. It's a yearly event where aspiring authors commit themselves to writing a novel of at least 50,000 words over 30 days. It is held during the month of November.
NaPoWriMo, or National Pony Writing Month, is a version of it specifically for MLP fanfiction authors. It asks you to set your own writing goals: mine was to write 20,000 words in November.

I suppose its not really "necessary" in any sense of the word, but some people find it to be challenging, fun, or otherwise enjoyable to set a high goal and strive for it. Personally, I have been wanting to focus more on my writing because I have been neglecting it in favor of other priorities. I chose to do this as a way to set a formal goal that would encourage me to write more and provide at least a small level of accountability to myself.
