I'm Disappointed in the Pokemon Fandom · 4:18am May 14th, 2016
This is something I've wanted to talk about for a while now, actually. 
I know that this message won't get far; I know I'm just one person who has this stupid thought that probably no one really cares about, but if you're willing to hear me out, then I thank you. I want to talk about a semi-serious thing that might actually drive the entire Pokemon fandom insane. Well, more insane than it is already, but you get the picture.
I want to talk about what I believe the fandom is leaning towards nowadays.
Recently, the new trailer for Pokemon Sun and Moon have come out. If you haven't seen it, here; take a look! It's really cool, and it's getting me really excited for November!
Everything's here, including a brand new region for us to explore, the awesome new legendary Pokemon, and the starters, Rowlet, Litten and Popplio. Rowlet and Litten have received an overwhelmingly positive response from Pokemon fans, what with the former being called "cute" because of his bowtie and the former being a breath of fresh air for finally a cat Pokemon we already know won't suck. But notice how I didn't include Popplio there? The poor water-type starter has been receiving negative feedback up the ass. And why?
Because of its design.
Allow me to repeat that. It's getting all of this hate because of its design.
For the sake of everyone, I'll try and refrain from getting angry during this "rant" like blog. However, I would like to express how disappointed I am with how almost everyone has reacted to Popplio. This is what I believe the majority of the Pokemon fans are becoming or have already become; they're so focused on the Pokemon designs that they forget the true beauty of things within. Corny? Yes. But true? Absolutely.
Remember Vanillux? How about Chandelure and Cofagrigus? Hell, even Oshawott, for the sake of connecting this back to Popplio! All of these really, REALLY good Pokemon SO many people have passed up because "Oh, it's ice cream, so it must suck!" or "Another inanimate object Pokemon? GameFreak is really running out of ideas!". And of course, let's not forget Oshawott who, if memory serves, was also bashed because of its design. Well, look how well ALL of these Pokemon turned out, eh? Vanillux and Chandelure are incredible special attackers, Cofagrigus is a stuprisingly sturdy Ghost-type, and Oshawott eventually evolves into the almighty Samurott, which people thought was awesome!
I don't think I've made a single point in this entire blog. 
Okay, I won't drag this on any longer than it needs to be. The point I'm trying to make here is that you shouldn't judge a ANYTHING, let alone a Pokemon, by its appearance. Ever. The saying goes "Don't judge a book by its cover", and that's something a lot of Pokemon fans, not just kids, are forgetting.
Of course, I'm not ignoring the fact there are others who have listened to this rule. The Popplio Defense Squad has been put up on various media sites, and so far is doing a fantastic job in raising awareness for the little seal clown. I might not be choosing Popplio as my starter for this adventure, since my soul was pretty much bound to cats anyway, but I truly hope the best for him on this uphill battle.
If it makes him any happier though, my sister seems to have some interest in choosing him...

I absolutely agree with you, it's really sad that how the fandom has grown to judging just the designs. Even though I'm not involved much in the fandom, I still love the series
Y'know what attracts me to a pokemon? There are three things. Lore, the look of the pokemon, and it's abilities. Most of the time I choose the fire starter because it's the strongest, even if I don't like it's lore or look. For instance, I chose Cyndaquil, now, I personally don't like Cyndaquil, I think his name is cool but that's it, however, I do absolutely love fire type pokemon, so I chose him. And, of the three starters in Pokemon Ruby my favorite design was treeco, but I chose the plush torchic because it's the way I play the game.

I think Popplio and Rowlet are cute, and to be honest I kind of think Litten's design is a bit lazy. That said I still think all three are adorable. Besides they're making fun of Popplio's design when there are pokemon that have less interesting (and downright lazy) designs in current existing pokemon, someone needs to wake up and reexamine their assessment of the series.

3943363 To be honest, I really like Popplio's design, I know I said it before but warrants saying again. It looks like a cute little circus performer, the design in my opinion is one of the more creative ones.
Yeah the fans can really act brash. I've read some saying that only the first two generations are good and what came after is garbage.
I'm a fan from the first generation and I never had a problem with their design or names. I always went with the water starter since a prefer water Pokemon. So Popplio will be welcome with open arms in my party.

Ya know, you make a good point with Oshawott. Popplio might look goofy now, but we don't know what it evolves into. Kinda reminds me of Chespin to Chesnaught.

I guess I was one of the few that always liked Oshawott. Now with this game I will admit I'm very excited for Litten and Rowlet but that doesn't mean I don't like Popplio. I love all this designs and can't wait to see there other evolutions along with Popplio and Litten second typing. Just imagine Popplio as a water fairy and Litten as a fire poison.
I love them all the starters but it's the final that's going to make it for me.
I think Popplio's adorable, myself. But if folks are going to be so adamantly against him, then I'll probably use him as my starter out of spite.

While I'm going to play in my Moon version as Litten (as I always pick the fire type) I do think the water starter is pretty cool looking and if I buy a second Sun game down the road I'm picking the water starter as they look more interesting than Rowlet (though I am glad we finally get a grass type starter that's a bird as we've had Torchic and Piplup and now Rowlet). I don't understand why some starters got pulled to the wayside some don't. during RSE days Torchic was more popular over the other two iirc.

Torchic was the most popular, but what happened to the Fire/Fighting thing again? Oh yeah, it sucked. Turns out Swampert is the starter Pokemon with the HIGHEST base stat total, and Sceptile is one of the most rounded starters ever.
I was always going to pick that little seal because of how interesting it looks. I mean, we don't get a lot of seal Pokemon, and this one completely threw me off guard.

It's nice to see Popplio getting the attention he deserves. My heart and soul is bound to the curse of Litten, but maybe my sister will enjoy using Popplio.

The clown seal is classy. Trubbish and Garbodor shouldn't even exist given the likes of Grimer and Muk however... Now THERE'S a couple I hate from design alone, but that's because they'd be the kind of things I'd expect Grimer and Muk to feed on. Yes, I get the whole toxic waters thing compared to solid ground, but garbage dumps sure as heck ain't lacking in the 'questionably wet' stuff you find there...
And come on, just how original was the likes of Geodude, Magnemite, or Voltorb anyway? Literally a rock with arms, an orb with magnets, and an energy ball... thing... But I like them as is.
Popplio is getting that kind of treatment from other fans
but his super cute and I don't normally use the word cute and so far, he's the pokemon I'm gonna use
